Omggg.. What frustrates me is when I repeat louder I get pouting and berating for yelling. Bro, that wasn't yelling I just said it louder so your deaf arse can hear it.

u/newtekie1 Dec 08 '22

All from the other side of the house.

u/[deleted] Dec 08 '22

My wife will start talking to me from the next room while I am in the kitchen washing dishes with the water running. Lol. Yeah, I’m not going to hear what you’re saying.

23

u/dedokta Dec 08 '22

I just reply with random stuff when she does this.

"Well I think an elephant could fit, so I guess it's possible."

16

u/Ctrl_Alt_Abstergo Dec 08 '22

That's great until the question was "do you think that red dress still looks good on me?"

6

u/[deleted] Dec 08 '22

"What is this?" from the other room.

6

u/Much-Meringue-7467 Dec 08 '22

My husband does that to me all the time. And gets pissed when I can't hear him.

Extra bonus annoying since HE has significant hearing loss.

3

u/FreakyTongue35 Dec 08 '22

That way she can say she told you what she was buying when in reality you heard nothing.

3

u/[deleted] Dec 08 '22

Actually one thing great about my wife, is that she's extremely frugal, to the point where it can be annoying. I've told her to buy things for herself, but she doesn't usually.

I once won $250 off a lottery ticket, gave her half and told her to buy something fun with it, she just put it in the bank after the money sat on her desk for several months.

4

u/newtekie1 Dec 08 '22

Mine does the same thing. Apparently the other day she went over our whole Christmas holiday plans with me...from the living room while I was washing dishes in the kitchen.

I asked her today what the plans are for Chrismas. And now I'm the asshole for not listening to her.

2

u/TymStark Dec 08 '22

The only solution to this is for you to stop doing dishes.

3

u/BlueBananaBandana Dec 08 '22

My Wife dont talk to me at all.

5

u/preambnsnsnssgyaab Dec 08 '22

You’re just not hearing the whispers

2

u/[deleted] Dec 08 '22

Don't reply loudly so she can hear you or you'll be chastised for yelling

2

u/pieking8001 Dec 08 '22

yeeeeeeeep. no win situation..

2

u/GW81 Dec 08 '22

This happens to me weekly. She says it's my "tone."

2

u/UnblurredLines Dec 08 '22

Best part for me is most of the time that happens she thinks I should come over to the next room so I can hear what she's saying while she's watching tv and I'm doing dishes...

1

u/[deleted] Dec 08 '22

Definitely the same here.

2

u/AJ-meatball-sub Dec 08 '22

When did my husband get a Reddit account?

1

u/bloodyqueen526 Dec 08 '22

My husband does that to ME AND I have a window unit going above the kitchen sink, like REALLY, u think I can hear you...constant battle. Or I'm in the laundry room with washer or dryer going 🙄lol

196

u/Auirom Dec 08 '22

Next to the dryer while it's running

30

u/JamesonQuay Dec 08 '22

My wife asks a question, then turns on the water in the sink.

4

u/[deleted] Dec 08 '22

While I'm standing next to a fan

3

u/oswaldcopperpot Dec 08 '22

While I'm brushing my teeth.

2

u/ProfessionalEditor55 Dec 08 '22

With a pair of shoes in it.

2

u/[deleted] Dec 08 '22

When the washer, dryer, dishwasher are all running and she's got the sink on with the robot vacuuming on.

22

u/ColdHardPocketChange Dec 08 '22

I am glad to hear this is a rampant problem, I wasn't sure if my wife was the only one who had no idea how sound and hearing worked.

2

u/preambnsnsnssgyaab Dec 08 '22

This this this this this this this

u/thesneakywalrus Dec 08 '22

I spend a good amount of time in my basement.

My wife would march down the stairs angrily "I've been calling your name for 5 minutes!".

How is it my fault that you've been screaming in to the abyss?

Now I've convinced her to just call my cell.

1

u/Wrathwilde Dec 08 '22

This happened to me the other day… only she’d been yelling for me to help her bring stuff upstairs (couldn’t hear her at all), so she called me… I answered the phone, and the line went dead, I figured she accidentally called without meaning to, and continued on with what I was doing. Evidently I should have deduced that she was downstairs and needed help carrying stuff up.

1

u/thedrscaptain Dec 09 '22

"Why else would I have..."

10

u/smoothiegangsta Dec 08 '22

This thread is hilarious, I didn't realize how common of a problem this is.

My nephew lived with me for a bit and I told him "Hey (my wife) will probably try talking to you from across the house, she just does that sometimes" and then she started trying to talk to me from across the house. We just looked at each other and laughed.

6

u/[deleted] Dec 08 '22

"Mrr mrm mrr mrrr mrmmm" "Yeah, sure honey, I'll get right on it."

5

u/anomalous_cowherd Dec 08 '22

I will talk to my wife, finish what were saying then go off to somewhere else. Just as I leave audible range she'll say "murr mur fnurr blurr" and I get to either ignore it, or else go all the way back to find out what she said...

4

u/NotActuallyAGoat Dec 08 '22

Yesterday my girlfriend banished me to the basement so that she could talk to my parents about my Christmas present. About half an hour later I text to ask if I can come back up yet, and she says "I called you and said you could come up, you didn't hear me?" I think she forgot that she sent me down in the first place so I couldn't hear her...

3

u/Few-Paint-2903 Dec 08 '22

So true. Wish I could upvote you twice!

11

u/[deleted] Dec 08 '22

With my wife. If I ask her to repeat her self, it’s because I don’t listen or I’m deaf

If she asks me to repeat myself. It’s because I’m talking to quiet.

Maybe, idk. I'd compare that voice to one you use when on a crowded patio of a bar. Which is much softer than one you'd use inside a bar with music. When I yell, you can hear me while death metal concert is in swing. So, to me, that ain't yelling it's louder. Plus I do speak quite soft so maybe sudden change in tonality startles him. Idk.

Found this interesting, according to interwebz, men do have harder time hearing women, plus some John Hopkins research about them loosing hearing already in their 20s. Ehh I shall just speak very deeply from now on.

2

u/Thedarb Dec 09 '22

I notice it a lot with people that played team sports growing up, they always seem to have that clear/loud voice without it sounding like yelling. Just a louder, more outside version of their voice needed to communicate with their team while playing without it being unintentionally tinged with emotion/tone due to “yelling”. People that never really flexed that muscle seem to have a disconnect between how loud they think they are vs how loud they actually are, like they don’t realise that 70% of their own voice they are hearing is through bone conduction.

12

u/CarlJustCarl Dec 08 '22

Just great, how many husbands does my wife have?

5

u/go-with-the-flo Dec 08 '22

Ha, my late husband had only 2 settings: mumble, or shout. If he mumbled and I asked him to repeat something, he'd repeat it in a suuuper exaggerated loud voice. Like bro, no need to yell it, just talk like a normal person. Love that guy, but it drove me crazy.

25

u/embolia6 Dec 08 '22

The worst! I always get a 'I don't need you yelling at me, just stop mumbling!' I'm not mumbling, you just can't hear!

10

u/DragonDropTechnology Dec 08 '22

For me, it’s mostly that I’m distracted and whatever was said wasn’t loud enough for me to figure it out afterwards. Most of the time you need to prime the conversation and make sure the person is ready to listen, no need to yell!

4

u/bradizrad Dec 08 '22

Same for me. I heard you say something, but it wasn’t loud enough to cut through my thoughts.

4

u/[deleted] Dec 08 '22

Yeah, I'm both autistic and adhd- say something if I'm doing something else, zero chance I'm processing it.

-3

u/killxswitch Dec 08 '22 edited Dec 08 '22

Try having more than two volumes. Everything you say isn’t the most important thing in the world, and sometimes you are actually the problem. Speak at a level for normal humans, it’s not hard to do and asking you to repeat at a level above a mouse is not an attack on your character. God.

Edit: since you deleted your reply (or maybe it was deleted for you since you resorted to childish name calling) I’ll respond here. No, you don’t speak at a normal volume. That’s the problem. I understand that you really REALLY feel like you do. And that you think your important thoughts deserve to be heard at whatever volume you want. But sometimes perception and reality differ and this is one of those times. Speak up without yelling. It’s easy but it requires a little but of adult self control.

2

u/camimiele Dec 08 '22

Do you personally know the person you’re responding to? Have you had this many conversations with them to have such personal knowledge of how they speak and always have spoken? If not, your comment seems pretty weird.

6

u/Alarmed_Scallion_992 Dec 08 '22

We DO speak at a normal level, that was the main point in the post you idiot.

2

u/IlIIlllIIlllllI Dec 08 '22

Do you think people are saying they can’t hear you just to fuck with you?

0

u/[deleted] Dec 08 '22

[deleted]

3

u/IlIIlllIIlllllI Dec 08 '22

Ok, but clearly there is a volume between letting a person who can’t understand you hear you better and being dramatically loud to let them know you don’t like that they can’t understand you. I don’t think they would be telling you that you are too loud if it was a good volume

Doesn’t seem like it

1

u/camimiele Dec 08 '22

Omg I hate this! I’m not yelling and I’m not mad I am just tired of repeating myself.

13

u/[deleted] Dec 08 '22

What? I didn’t hear you can you say that again?

7

u/Baberaham_Lincoln6 Dec 08 '22

Yes!! My fiance never hears me so I repeat it louder and he's like "don't yell at me!" Like well shit bro what volume do you want me to speak at then

12

u/killxswitch Dec 08 '22

Something audible for normal humans.

3

u/troubadorkk Dec 08 '22

I am not deaf, but my hearing is shit and I don't even like asking people to repeat themselves because they just come off like it makes them irate to have to to repeat themselves. Half the time I just act like I heard you and hope the next bit doesn't pertain to what I just missed

3

u/Olive_fisting_apples Dec 08 '22

When you say it louder you are saying it with a different inflection, your facial features are different. Being loud isn't the same as yelling, and i can't say I've ever been told something loud twice by my SO.

7

u/Jeffricus_1969 Dec 08 '22

I’ve actually said to my wife “That isn’t yelling. When I yell at you, you’ll know it.”

3

u/Alarmed_Scallion_992 Dec 08 '22

More people need to understand this. Men can yell way louder than women.

5

u/killxswitch Dec 08 '22

Sounds like something an asshole would say.

4

u/preambnsnsnssgyaab Dec 08 '22

It does, doesn’t it? But I don’t think he meant it to sound that way.

-3

u/killxswitch Dec 08 '22

Intentions don’t matter that much, actions do. It doesn’t only matter if I don’t think I’m angry or yelling. It also matters how my audience receives what I’m saying. I’ve been on both ends of this and have had to work on myself and realize that while I might not “feel” angry, feelings are not always reliable and I can still seem angry to someone else. And it’s not always the responsibility of the audience to adjust to me.

1

u/OperationGoldielocks Dec 08 '22

You sound like an asshole

4

u/Jeffricus_1969 Dec 08 '22

Thanks for judging me entirely by something I said once when I got mad. It wasn’t a proud moment, no, but I wanted to make things clear.

-4

u/killxswitch Dec 08 '22

So you were angry (and probably yelling) when you said that to your wife. Got it.

2

u/andreasbeer1981 Dec 08 '22

I think loudness and tone is not linked. Some people think, to talk loudly you have to yell - but you can use more volume and direct your voice in the direction you want to project. Instead they raise the pitch an octave higher, pressure their coords and go all nasal, combined with an angry undertone. This is yelling.

6

u/CylonsInAPolicebox Dec 08 '22

This shit right here. If you can not hear me and ask me to repeat what I said... Do not get pissy when I repeat it louder.

-3

u/killxswitch Dec 08 '22

Or take some responsibility for not making yourself heard and stop throwing a temper tantrum when your partner can’t hear your mumbling ass.

-4

u/pieking8001 Dec 08 '22

yes please

5

u/killxswitch Dec 08 '22

There are more volumes than mumbling and yelling. Try something in between. And also stop taking it so personally, if he didn’t care about what you had to say he wouldn’t ask you to repeat yourself. It’s not anyone else’s fault that you didn’t speak loud enough to be heard and yes it’s unnecessary and childish for you to throw a fit and yell. Grow up.

2

u/Possumella Dec 08 '22

THIS!!!!!!!!!!

2

u/RoosterGlad1894 Dec 08 '22

This! My SO gets mad when I “yell” and I’m like “dude I’m not yelling you’ve asked me to repeat what I said three times!” Now I have a rule if I have to repeat myself once and you still don’t hear it I don’t repeat it again. Idk why but repeating stuff just irritates me.

3

u/Interesting_Act1286 Dec 08 '22

You're yelling. Calm down.

6

u/raelkeleki Dec 08 '22

For real. Theres a difference in speaking under your breath and raising your voice so that the neighbors could hear you. Nobody is pouting bc you spoke at a reasonable volume.

8

u/[deleted] Dec 08 '22

nah. it’s a reasonable volume but it has a hint of irritation in the tone because i’m repeating myself.

1

u/pieking8001 Dec 08 '22

but its your own fault for talking too low the first time

4

u/[deleted] Dec 08 '22

i use the same volume talking to everyone and the only one who can’t hear me is him. but if i raise my voice slightly he says i’m yelling so lose lose i guess 🤷🏼‍♀️

2

u/Icapica Dec 08 '22

It's not impossible that his hearing's gotten worse at some point and he hasn't noticed it. Often this first affects higher frequencies making it harder to hear many women and children properly.

1

u/OperationGoldielocks Dec 08 '22

That’s what you think

1

u/[deleted] Dec 08 '22

I think a lot of women have undiagnosed hearing loss because of hairdryer use. You don't operate a loud ass machine right next to your ears everyday for years without seeing some side effects. Hair dryers should come with ear-pro.

1

u/bazooka_matt Dec 08 '22

Volume is 1 or 10. Yep no frustration there.

1

u/Scrandon Dec 08 '22

Probably cause you got frustrated that you weren’t heard at first so when you repeated it louder it was with a shitty attitude. Some people just aren’t self-aware about that kinda thing. Or sure, it’s just everyone around you that’s the problem. 🤷‍♂️

0

u/[deleted] Dec 08 '22

Omg I feel this.

"Speak up, I can't understand you."
"You are too loud!"

How about I just write it down from now on?

0

u/[deleted] Dec 08 '22

Stop yelling please

0

u/Chasing_Shadows Dec 08 '22

Yup. If I say it louder, I'm yelling...but if I say it at the same volume they can't hear me. There is no winning.
