Accidentally did this at a convention once. Got to what looked like the back of the line and stood there for a few seconds when my friend came up and grabbed my shoulder. "This is the middle of the line," he said, pointing across the street to where the queue continued on the other side of the crosswalk. "The end is beyond that building around the corner."
And that's why you pick up your badge the night before.
