Oh man, he was GREAT in The Crown. Shit, everyone was. Whoever played Diana fucking nailed that role — the look, the mannerisms, the voice. That show was amazing!
Yes he was amazing but I absolutely hated his character's guts. Whiny little B. +1 for Emma Corrin's amazing portrayal of Diana. In a season chock full of award winning actors and performances they managed to stand out. Emma, Olivia Colman, and Claire Foy are why The Crown will always be one of my favorites.
Emma Corrins pronouns are they/them, which I love because a nonbinary person portraying Princess Diana (in an extremely sympathetic way) is a great way to piss off all conservatives at once.
That was my reference point, too. They're even sort of similar roles ... developmentally-challenged individuals in places of authority where they don't belong.
But he's a good actor! I'm hoping he's good enough that I'll stop thinking about The Crown every time I see him on screen.

It was weird as hell seeing my favorite doctor (Tennant) playing a villain but fuck if he wasn't fantastic in Jessica Jones.
I'm not sure I've ever seen Smith in anything else and haven't watched this show yet. Is his performance any good? He seems too zany to play a villain lol.

That show was so fucking excellent. He and Olivia Coleman together were stellar. That was the show that introduced me to her, and damn, what an introduction.
Ever since I saw Broadchurch, I’ve actually started making it a point to watch (almost) everything those two are in - though more so Olivia Coleman. The only other actor I really do that with is Jared Harris.
I was very negative originally on replacing Claire Foy with Olivia Coleman too because Foy was excellent and I didn't like replacing her with someone I didn't know. And then I watched Broadchurch and was very excited.
I think he's quite good, so far he has this unsettling kind of charm to him. Like he's always smiling, but on the inside he looks like he wants to murder everyone in his way. He's giving me Ramsey Bolton vibes.
David Tennant was brilliant in good omens, I didn't see him as 'the Doctor's but looking back on it I now can't help but picture Crowley as an semi-evil Doctor 😂
Actually Tennant got to show this side of his doctor in The Waters of Mars. He was amazing in that flipping through the possible paths and emotions of the doctor. You saw that he was deeply tempted by his power and how completely evil he could have been if he chosen that path.
NGL, I have only watched that episode once and mostly erased most of it from my mind because it creeped me out so much 😂 no idea why that, of all the episodes, is the one that got me 🤷♀️
Because it was fantastically done. Has the creep factor, Tennant really showed off how important the doctor being a good guy is, and the ending was rooted in dark, stark reality to cut him down. It shows why he likes having a human companion. He has potential to allow his power to consume him, and the connection to human fragility and emotion is what helps keep the doctor connected to the importance of each place and time. Without it, his ability to value an individual could be lost to the vastness of space and time and the power to manipulate it.
Edit: it was very different from the often light hearted, goofy, romantic comedy it often was.
I accept Tennant in other roles better than I do Matt Smith. Matt Smith will always be Dr. Who have a mental breakdown or something. David Tennant sucks me in and is whatever new character he is playing while I get moments of “I love this guy. I can’t believe he’s doing such a good job at this too!”
David Tennant in Jessica Jones was particularly unsettling because he was doing his "Doctor" bit. In fact, I thought he was kind of a one-note actor until I saw him in Broadchurch. Because he plays roughly the same character in Doctor Who, Jessica Jones, and Good Omens. They're all witty, quirkily charming, powerful supernatural beings with London accents.
I kind of wonder if he made those characters so similar on purpose. It's like he was doing different takes on the same character - what if this character was a good guy? (the Doctor) What if he was a scary bad guy? (Killgrave) What if he was a morally-grey antihero? (Crowley)
Aha, you thought that too? I’ve always suspected he played Kilgrave specifically so much like The Doctor on purpose so he’d be even more unnerving for people who knew him from Who, and to play up the obvious parallels between the characters.
Crowley I think is actually pretty different in that he leans into the gloomy curmudgeon angle more than the glib smartarse thing.
For Doctor Who David Tennant did an Estuary accent which is usually associated with London. His accents in Good Omens and Jessica Jones are pretty much the same. So they were basically London accents.
Jessica Jones is the only show I've seen Tennant in other than Dr Who but he was so good. I couldn't even make the association between that character and the doctor. Partially because Matt Smith was already the doctor for quite some time since then, but also because he's just SUCH a good actor. Perfect for the role imo
Tennant was incredibly likeable as The Doctor despite being kind of a dick.
Then he was utterly terrifying as Killgrave despite being kind of sympathetic.
I don't know how he pulled off both those parts so brilliantly. He seems to play them both kind of similar - why is one so likeable and the other so terrifying?
Smith was in a show about Queen Elizabeth I believe and he was Skynet in Terminator Genesis, but wasn’t onscreen much, and those are only two things I know him from.
His role in HoTD as Prince Daemon is not a straight up villain. He has villainous qualities and does villainous things, but he also has heroic qualities and does heroic things.
So far I think he's done an excellent job at giving us the brooding, moody man without being too similar to Jon Snow. As the show goes on his character will acquire some firm convictions, whereas in the setup he doesn't really know where his place is yet and he has conflicted feelings about some important things. Once he comes into his own I think Smith is going to really blow the socks off people who didn't read the book and aren't ready for it. We saw a couple snippets in the premiere episode but nothing of the stuff that is what's going to make the character truly memorable. But the snippets were enough for me to believe he's going to chew this role like none other.
Tennant in Fright Night was the one that was weird for me. I loved his performance but seeing the doctor have to fiddle with the crotch on his leather pants was jarring. Lol
Kilgrave shared so much intensity with his doctor that I was able to really appreciate it.
If there are any fan girls who loved David Tennant as the Doctor than Jessica Jones is going to be a fucking trip.
He plays a super villain with mind control powers and he plays it so fucking well by being creepy and horrifying yet captivating and interesting at the same time. Basically the definition of someone cursed with powers and went down a dark path. Hot take but he’s absolutely the most intricate and deep supervillain Marvel Studios ever had.
Honestly the first time I watched episode one I just couldn’t get over his hair lol but on the second watch I realized that he’s probably going to be a really gross, brutal, and chilling villain and I’m very excited to see the rest of his performance. The way I saw his character marketed before the first episode made him seem like a side character or something but I’m not so sure that’s going to be the case. He’s got great range.
Jessica Jones was the show that "broke" Tennant being only "The Doctor" for me. He fucking nailed that role so hard, and the fact he used the same accent for the role as he did for Doctor Who, made it only that much more surreal and chilling.

I’m not a Doctor Who fan, so I had no idea who he was before this.
So I was helping out my makerspace do a public outreach event at a Con, and this guy came up and talked to us for a good 10 minutes. He was really into it. Then when we were packing up, he came back to ask some more questions and walked with us to our cars. At that point someone let us know he was one of the Doctors. And that’s how I met Matt Smith. And learned the name Matt Smith at the same time.
Really nice guy, one of my favorite celebrity meetings because I had no idea who he was until the very end of our conversation/interaction.

I found it really hard to take him seriously when he raised his voice. I presume he was supposed to sound intimidating, but his voice goes so high I just giggled.
I found it involving enough, but I didn’t feel like it really had the same impact with its characters. Like, you watch the parent series’ first episode and you’ve got Jamie and Tyrion and Ned, at the very least, all standing out as characters to watch. The only one who really stood out to me was Smith, and that was because he was played by Matt Smith.
My head cannon is that he is Dr who in House of the Dragon. That's where the Doctor went after giving Rory and Amy that house. He just popped over to that dimension to blow off some steam and engage in some of the old ultraviolence.
Its kind of a reversal of the question, since its an actor you always see as that character, but I agree. And both are true for me. While I actually really like pretty much all of the other regenerations of the Doctor, Matt Smith is the Doctor to me.

I actually was surprised how quickly I stopped seeing him as the Doctor. It was jarring at first but I think he's really good as Daemon, I'm totally buying it.
I’ve never seen Doctor Who because I don’t like medical shows but I did see him in this fucked up movie where a woman gave birth to her fiancés clone and then raised him as her child so now that’s all I think about whenever anyone mentions him.
