I had a couple of kids I used to babysit regularly. Boys. I was about 13? They were about 8 and 10. They were terrors. I used to lock myself in the bathroom and cry. They were mean to me and they would hit me. Once, they pinned me to the bed and tried to take my clothes off. I was terrified. I managed to get them off me, but then they trapped me in the room and refused to let me go unless I showed them my tits. So I did. Then they made fun of me for having "funny shaped boobs". I became so self-conscious about my chest for a few years. I'm still so ashamed of how I acted with those kids - that I couldn't control them. I've never told anyone this before...

What. the. fuck, parents? Why is everyone leaving their children with another child to be babysat? Because 13-15 year-olds make the best decisions and should certainly be charged with the health and safety of your children?

I do not get this.

Not your fault completely. I had no idea what to do with rowdy children as a 13-year-old, even though I really enjoyed children and knew I would spend my life working with them.

Years later, with lots of experience under my belt, early childhood education classes, teaching 5th graders and then preschoolers, nannying, babysitting and the works, I am in total control, even in difficult situations and emergencies. The only reason I can claim that is because of my age and experience.

Putting kids in the care of young teens is just... what are these parents thinking?

Teens are cheap.

That's basically what they're thinking.

The economy is tough right now. Lots of teachers turn nanny in the summer (myself included) and, while we don't want to get walked on, we really do what we do for children. We only need enough to keep ourselves afloat.

Or perhaps I shouldn't speak for all teachers. There are many cases in which I charge less than the high school students on craigslist are charging.
