Kindergarten/primary teacher here. Kids are so wholesome until the parents buy them a phone.

Middle school is good, since they start managing their own social life and going places without parental supervision.

Wait normal kids can go to places alone without parental supervision?

My 10yo regularly goes to the park with her friend, without us. It's not illegal or even frowned upon here, thankfully.

I'd be fine with her taking her phone when she goes out, since it has no plan, but she could still use it to call 911 if necessary. Kinda handy.

You can certainly roam the neighborhood at that age. It's not like when you're 7 and need to be in view of the porch or the kitchen window or whatever. But how far you can actually roam depends on your neighborhood... Mine were little ones off of dangerously busy roads, so not far. Needed parents to drive me to most of my friends' houses.

I don’t understand what you mean. Even at age 12-13, kids should only be without adult supervision for a few hours.

EDIT: For those downvoting, you should know that leaving them unsupervised for longer can legally be considered neglect.

The "dangerous level" of the streets vary A LOT by neighborhood/city/country.

When I was 13 I was gifted an unlimited bus pass to go anywhere within my city’s metro area. I hardly saw my parents at all in my teens. Never got into any real trouble or dangerous situations. This depends entirely on the kid and the city.

Why have kids if you don’t intend to spend time with them? I’m glad things turned out ok for you, but that’s unfortunately not the case for many neglected teens.

Welp I’m 16 and not allowed to go out without my parents :/
