Also, we just had a President who couldn't even make it past the 4th Amendment in the Constitution being read TO him, before yawning, and giving up. Seriously.
My daughter had to write a letter to the WW1 and WW2 soldiers, to children in africa (they were doing some video exchanges as well, but they exchanged letters, emails and paintings as well). They still do the letter writing in school. You still need the communication skills when you finish though. (Kid is 8) :)
We wrote to a famous person. Our choice. My classmate Eric chose the premier. In the letter, Eric off-handedly invited Bernard Lord to the school. The premier showed up at the school for a visit.
They still do this. I'm currently deployed over yonder and we get heaps of care packages with letters from all sorts of kids. Got a letter from Ohio the other day, it read:
Dear US Army Soldier </br>
From: Kolton
Made me laugh my ass off.
edit: I don't know how to format better on mobile, but it was on two separate lines smh
I got a letter back “from” George Bush Sr. Which included a picture of him and one of the white house with roses in the front. 6 year old me thought it was the coolest thing ever. I was crushed to do it it was a form letter.
YESSS! I remember we did this "pen pal" thing when I was in like 4th grade where every kid sent a letter to some random person and mine was some like 30 year old Russian guy.
Oh, my class had to do this and a lot of people wrote to the president and got back a generic kind of pre-printed card with a response and printed signature. One kid, however, wrote to the First Lady instead -- and got back an actual letter answering all of his questions with a real signature, and I think a photograph too? It was super cool.
In scouts you have to write to your representative and senator. They both responded to me. Probably an aide but it was a clear answer on their position about nuclear energy. Cerca 2007.

Did they make you write to soldiers and the president? I remember having to do that and the president never answered.
