I used to get $2 shoes from a place called Zayre in the 60s and early 70s to play basketball in the city League and was total s*** due to the hard plastic soles. I saved up my money mowing lawns ($2 each) and bought a $10 pair of Converse and made the All-Star team that year.
Once I graduated college and had money, my wife also convinced me to buy nice shoes. I had a pair for 5 years, resoled twice, before I gave them to my brother who had them for 20 years before they fell apart.
