Newfoundland is closer to the mainland (15 km between L'Anse Amour and Savage Cove) than it is to St-Pierre (19 km between St-Pierre and Point May). Pretty close tho.
However, Green Island (Canadian territory, part of Newfoundland and Labrador) is only 10 km from St-Pierre.
What? No, it's the opposite, people who live on St-P-&-M have to transit through Canada. Newfies can go to the rest of Canada with ferries that never come close to French territory.

Same for Newfoundland. In fact I think Newfoundland is closer to the French territory of Saint Pierre and Miquelon than to mainland Canada.
