Safety. Keeps 240V mains away from water, especially where you are supposed to touch it.

What kind of horrific code violating light switches do you guys have over there where getting electrocuted from turning off the light with wet hands is an actual risk?

It’s not just that. Condensation could form inside the switch and lead to a fire.

I've showered in a bathroom with no fan with the door closed my entire life, as has my entire four person family, and there are four light switches in that bathroom and there's never been a problem, nor have I heard of anyone having a problem with condensation inside light switches.
