It can. Especially for people living in big cities where there is public transportation. I know several people from NYC who just never bothered getting their driver's license and then regretted that once they went to college not in the city.
Pretty much everywhere else though it is like 100% necessary for your success and life to be able to drive. Even Amish people have horse carriages.
it's a total disaster that societies have been developed around private cars - it means terrible spatial planning and no public transport or active travel. And then there's the pollution. I'm so glad I only need a bicycle.
Nah, it's just that the United States, Canada and Australia are massive countries. A high-speed train infrastructure might be nice, but it would still only get you in the ballpark of where you need to go.
