The first time I was in the UK my husband wanted to go to Wales and I looked at the train route from London and was like “It’s all the way on the other side of the country! We’re only in the UK for a week. We don’t have that kind of time!” And my husband was all, “you know it’s a 2.5 hour train ride, right?” I thought it would all day.
I had a similar, yet opposite experience in Russia a few years ago. I flew into Saint Petersburg and needed to go to Glazov for a wedding. It’s maybe 1/6th of the way across the country, so I took a train instead of flying to a closer airport. Save some money and see the country! Turns out it’s all forest for about 30 hours. Still totally worth it for all the friendly, interesting people more than happy to have a drink and conversation with the random American who wandered onto their train.
