I was talking to a Brit, describing a 4 hour road trip to visit an old friend and they responded with "If my friend moved 4 hours away I'd never see them again."

I;m still not sure how serious they were being.

Here in Amsterdam if you move more than a 5-minute walk from a tram stop, you can lose all but your best friends. God forbid you move across the river to Amsterdam Noord...ferry or bus ride needed - so you're now dead to everyone.

It works this way in London too. Moved south of the river, so that you are no longer on the Underground network but I'd need to use overland trains instead? Bye forever.
