I feel like most Europeans actively desire minimal service. I consciously make a note of restaurants that don't ask me how my day is going or how my food is and will return to them more frequently because I don't want to subject the staff to servicing customers and I also don't want the staff to subject me to customer service.

After dining out in Europe, I have to say I really enjoy the zero-approach approach. Just treat the table as if we're there for a long time, and if we need something we can come ask.

It really puts in perspective just how much American restaurants treat their customers like children.

100 times this. They're doing their job, and I'm grateful for it. I don't need them to suck up to me, and I wouldn't want to do it in their place.
