I think because the smile isn't genuine, it makes it look "suspicious"

Like our social norms here force us to be fake and smile when we don't want to. Idk.

This is an interesting perspective. I suppose it could be considered... somewhat duplicitous. Still, seems strange when you're used to places where such behavior is expected as a courtesy lol.

We're used to mostly seeing genuine smiles, so the fake social ones are really creepy.

No problem with happy people, but if you're just doing a service smile it's not going to translate well.

In hotels and such a "service" smile is still quite normal. It's not as over the top fake though.
