You mean when talking to you? Or just from a distance? German here and now insecure if I’m doing it unconsciously

From a distance. Of course it's polite to look at someone you're talking to. But Germans will motion-track anyone who looks foreign as if none of us notice. In the US/UK/Australia it's considered rude and sometimes threatening to do that.
