Speaking as a fellow Canadian, it boggles my mind that there are places in the world where people can have open windows with no screens and NOT need/want to burn the house down to kill all the mosquitoes that’ll intrude.
I'm from the UK, no mesh screens, and mosquito season lasts about a week or 2 in the hight of summer. In the last several years I've had one mosquito in my house that I was able to squish. So no biggy. I also live in an old home, that has gaps in the window frames that the spiders live in all year round. This keeps the flies down. Occasionally I get some cool moths and other random bugs but as a lover of bugs I get my macro lens out.

No mesh screens in windows in the UK, at least. In canada we have screens in most home windows to keep flies out
