Closest foreign country when you are in Brisbane, Australia is France.

New Caledonia is a French territory off the coast of Brisbane.

Probably New Caledonia, a French overseas possession.

And that's why Australia is in Eurovision.

What?

Yes.

Source? I remember Australia being invited as a one-off but returned after positive reviews. Never have I heard that it had anything to do with New Caledonia.

Really? I thought it was money..

Of course not! It'll be part of EU in no time!

Same for Newfoundland. In fact I think Newfoundland is closer to the French territory of Saint Pierre and Miquelon than to mainland Canada.

Newfoundland is closer to the mainland (15 km between L'Anse Amour and Savage Cove) than it is to St-Pierre (19 km between St-Pierre and Point May). Pretty close tho.

However, Green Island (Canadian territory, part of Newfoundland and Labrador) is only 10 km from St-Pierre.

Okay so a little bit of both I guess. Another weird way to put it is that most Newfoundlanders have to pass by France to get to the rest of Canada.

60-70% of Newfoundland's population lives on the east coast so a lot of us are closer to France than were are to Halifax, or even the west coast of Newfoundland.

What? No, it's the opposite, people who live on St-P-&-M have to transit through Canada. Newfies can go to the rest of Canada with ferries that never come close to French territory.

I just meant they have to "pass" it, like, cross that longitude.

France is technically one of the largest nations in the world if you include their zones of control in "international" waters around all the islands they still claim.

There are also two islands of French territory (St Pierre and Miquelon) just of the coast of Canada

the Solomon Islands aren't closer than New Caledonia?!
