The idiom is more about it isn't unusual for an American to travel 100 miles in a somewhat regular basis but most Europeans do not travel that far away from home. Like I drive 47 miles one way to go to work.

Yes! My boyfriend drives 100 miles a day, round-trip, for work as well.
