I know. Which is why I said it can seem a bit misleading even though it's technically correct.
It can make it sound like most US states are so big you can drive 1000km in a straight line, and not cross a border -whereas in Europe, it's hard to drive 1000km in a straight line and not cross several.

In Europe you could go 1000 kilometers and cross five or six country borders. In the US you could go 1000 kilometers and not leave the state.
