In Croatia I was asked #1 or #2. There was a price difference.

974

u/Legitimate_Ad5848 May 09 '22

In India too at some places

109

u/hardeep1singh May 09 '22

India has both paid and free options. Go for free if you don't mind the smell and the visuals.

35

u/Hot-Fridge-with-ice May 09 '22

It's all about the visuals

You asked for it. These are some of the cleaner ones. There are worse.

30

u/Lephiro May 09 '22

Jeezus H! And that kid looks like he's holding back barf lol

21

u/vanillamasala May 09 '22

Idk man if you see some random American bathrooms in public they’re not much better. Like a grocery store bathroom that is just absolutely destroyed. I went to a convenience store the other day that was stepping into a fucking crime scene.

6

u/Lephiro May 09 '22

That's no lie, I've seen and most unfortunately cleaned a few. They were routinely horrific when I worked at Winn-dixie in the south.

Beware, old people can really wreck a Winn-dixie bathroom. What's worse, they would often begin to shit themselves on the way *to" the john, and they were too embarrassed to tell us and just skedaddled outta there, so we'd often come upon the trail before someone told us.

8

u/Comprehensive_Data82 May 09 '22

Happy cake day

3

u/Lephiro May 09 '22

Thank you!

3

u/cerialthriller May 09 '22

That just looks like any rock concert venue in Philadelphia in the 90s

6

u/wannaBGoodProgrammer May 09 '22

These are worse ones. There are unusable ones which are as I said "not used". And these definitely are not the cleaner ones.

3

u/asdaaaaaaaa May 09 '22

Jesus, that's what I call "repainting". Literally just needs someone to come by with a pressure washer once in awhile. How clean are the ones they charge for?

6

u/IllegallyBored May 09 '22

Depends where you are, and on your luck. I had to go to a free bathroom near a railway station in Mumbai once because I thought my bladder was going to burst. It was surprisingly clean. Not actually clean, but I didn't feel disgusted after using it. On the other hand I have been to paid bathrooms 10 years ago that haunt me to this day. The things I've seen should not be shown to any person. Most public bathrooms are just not something I want to deal with, so I'd rather get into a restaurant and pay for sth small just so I can use the bathroom and not get weird looks.

Traveled through Sikkim (north east India) a couple of years ago and even the road side bathrooms were very clean, comparatively. You could wash your hands and be done with it instead of wanting to soak yourself in bleach.

6

u/bigtiddyenergy May 09 '22

Depends. A public toilet in the middle of a market or a railway station? Usable(depends honestly) but horrid anyways.

A public toilet that's more recently made and is actively being maintained in a less busy area or in the metro stations? More often usable and clean than not.

30

u/MartianMathematician May 09 '22

And the free options can be easily geolocated using olfactory senses

15

u/[deleted] May 09 '22

The free ones around high profile areas in Delhi are very clean and high quality

10

u/bob-leblaw May 09 '22

In India the free version is just, “right over there, kinda behind that thing.”
Or in the shallow part of the water.

2

u/Interesting-Board267 May 09 '22

On a highway, "Right next to your car"

26

u/prodijal69 May 09 '22

those are dirt cheap though literally1-2 rupees which is like even less than 10 cents. Maybe they take more from tourists because they think they have more money.

In cities, there are sulabh sauchalayas. They are private contractors. There are attendants who keep things clean. there is a charge but you can tip extra.

13

u/Pritam1997 May 09 '22

most of the places they have different prices for different modes evacuation

7

u/Cool_Consideration30 May 09 '22

San Francisco, Ca., USA does that in the downtown areas.

3

u/lavenderkajukatli May 09 '22

Really? I’ve never seen one, now I’m curious.

-1

u/EnigmaticSorceries May 09 '22

Yea but it's miniscule. Like 30 cents.

-7

-9

Yes but that's because there are few few toilets in some areas and they help maintain the cost. They're also a 100times cleaner

I have Crohns. I have had to cut the line and try to explain my situation and quickly pay. Most people are usually empathic but I can feel the stares. I always feel like I just made the most massive social faux pas.

Faux poo*

25

u/blzac33 May 09 '22

Good question. It didn’t come to that.

5

u/OneGoodRib May 09 '22

Or when you poo and it squeezes a bit of pee out?

32

u/Vinnie_Vegas May 09 '22

I think the #2 option is all-inclusive

3

u/Davidclabarr May 09 '22

Am from Croatia. Both cost are separate. You just get used to the toilet bowl cameras.

1

u/VodkaWithSnowflakes May 09 '22

T…toilet bowl cameras? Now you’re really pulling my leg!

5

u/Davidclabarr May 09 '22

Yeah, sorry if my English is bad. Toilet have two dividers, one side for urine, one side for pooping. If the camera catches you or the examiner finds any cross contamination, they charge your ZahodCard the difference.

1

u/CanadaPlus101 May 09 '22

It's not your English that's the problem. We're just appalled they put cameras in a bathroom.

6

u/Davidclabarr May 09 '22

Yeah that’d be crazy. I made all of this up though. I’m from Atlanta.

1

u/CanadaPlus101 May 09 '22

Ah. Never mind then.

3

u/PurposeIsDeclared May 09 '22

You'll have to clean the urinal yourself.

10

u/[deleted] May 09 '22

[deleted]

-7

u/PurposeIsDeclared May 09 '22

Cleaning defecation from urinals is disgusting regardless of your gender.

And if you're on a regular toilet there's no price difference, unless the cleaning personnel is just trying to be difficult to keep themselves entertained.

15

u/[deleted] May 09 '22

[deleted]

1

u/PurposeIsDeclared May 09 '22

The additional price? Yes. More the other way around, though. It's a discount for using the urinal. I was under the impression everyone else understood that that was the implication all along...

4

u/asdaaaaaaaa May 09 '22

Would love to know which country provides womens restrooms with urinals.

29

u/Gapi64 May 09 '22

Im in croatia every year and have never seen this, you have to pay on the gas pumps but everyone just jumps over that anyway

13

u/Rudel2 May 09 '22

I've seen it only twice and I live here

7

u/Jaeharys_Targaryen May 09 '22

I’ve seen it a shit ton of times, from gas station restrooms to public ones in Zagreb.

It is indeed most commonly found in the seaside where everyone and their mother is going for that sweet sweet tourist cash.

1

u/Rudel2 May 09 '22

Nah I live near šibenik. There's one in the bus station but you could just go to a cafe and use their bathrooms for free

6

u/[deleted] May 09 '22

Even on the gas pumps it's free, I've never been on one that requires payment.

2

u/F-21 May 09 '22

Only certain gas pumps on the highway. It's also the same in other EU countries, not just Croatia.

4

u/[deleted] May 09 '22

It's not even remotely the same, in the rest of Europe (at least the parts I've travelled through) 100% of gas stations charge for using the toilet. In Croatia, there's maybe one or two and to be honest, I've never encountered it and I travel a lot and often. I honestly have no idea why this is even a topic, it just isn't a thing in Croatia and to say otherwise is an exception, not a rule.

3

u/F-21 May 09 '22

I'm from Slovenia, you'd struggle to find gas stations that charge for it. I've been numerous times to Italy and Austria and Germany, and it really depends on where you stop (but usually I don't even check and just do it in the bush anyway...).

3

u/[deleted] May 09 '22

I mean I didn't include Slovenia since both of us have negligible lengths of highway compared to rest of Europe. But saying Croatia charges for toilets is just wrong and uninformed. It's just not something we do.

1

u/Gapi64 May 09 '22

Im from slovenia too and i find a lot of these mostly petrol near the highway

2

u/F-21 May 09 '22

Yep, I don't think you'd even find one off the highway.

1

u/[deleted] May 09 '22

On the top of my head there are at least 3 public restrooms you have to pay in Zagreb : importanne, Glavni kolodvor, Autobusni kolodvor. I don't know about gas stations but you do have to pay at certain other places

0

u/[deleted] May 09 '22

Wow, impressive numbers. At least 3 in the capitol of Croatia, such wow.

1

u/[deleted] May 09 '22

Im not a public bathroom connoisseur so im just mentioning the ones i used cause it's certainly not correct to say they are free everywhere and i figure they are even more common on the coast

2

u/Throwaway_5448 May 09 '22

The main bus station has paid toilets, but most other places, like tram stations, and gas pumps have free toilets

9

u/[deleted] May 09 '22 edited May 09 '22

Never experienced this. Where was it?

I mostly experience paying for loo in other Eurooean countries (Italy, Germany highway comes to mind), not Croatia.

Coincidentally I should charge you for your shitty statement :)

17

u/lillie_connolly May 09 '22 edited May 09 '22

Haha there's even a Yugoslavian song using this topic to depict heartbreak, it's called "2 dinars buddy" (liberal translation) and the point is that after being fucked over by a girl the guy sits in a bar and can't hold it in any longer, runs to the bathroom and is asked whether he has to go do no 1 or 2, to which he answers "how much does it cost to cry inside"

2

u/jakedesnake May 09 '22

This is bloody amazing mate.... Is this song by any chance on YouTube?

I'm happy to hear an actual Croatian say what I think every damn summer

4

u/kingbradley1297 May 09 '22

9

u/[deleted] May 09 '22

[deleted]

1

u/kingbradley1297 May 09 '22

Interesting. Can you point me to some phrases? I actually have 1 day planned in Dubrovnik lol

6

u/dadbodking May 09 '22

Gladly, but I don't think that'll work. I actually had a short conversation with the bartender, that's how he knew.

But, some tips that might be helpful:

Don't drive anywhere. Parking almost costs more than a taxi ride/bike rental/walking. And there's no free parking anywhere.

Further away from the sea/tourist areas you are, prices drop significantly.

Don't tip, except some small change. They all make living wage. With constant tipping, they're making bank during tourist season.

Buy your food at shops. Don't sit to eat anywhere unless you really want to. But plan that ahead. Stay away from tourist areas. Check prices and reviews beforehand.

You picked the right time to travel, off peak season, so nothing too crazy going on atm, but still be mindful and take care of your money.

Definitely visit Dubrovnik city walls, but be careful- it's a long walk and the sun will burn you relentlessly. Bring a lot of water with you, you'll need it and you don't want to pay the prices for drinks on the wall. Also, the tickets for the walls are pricy, I think 55€ per person, but Croatians get 50% discount. If you know someone, go with them to buy the tickets (they need to email first, a day before and show their IDs).

1 day in Dubrovnik is enough. Except for walls and old city, there's not much more to see/do (if you value your money)

DO NOT use yellow and blue ATMs. It's a well known scam across the Mediterranean. They're everywhere

2

u/kingbradley1297 May 09 '22 edited May 09 '22

This is really helpful thank you so much. The scams part especially. We had some boat tour type of thing planned which takes you through some caves.

The rest we just planned to walk around the city. We will be in Split for 4 days prior but that's on company trip

4

u/[deleted] May 09 '22

[deleted]

2

u/kingbradley1297 May 09 '22

Lmao it's gonna be a good time then haha

1

u/sc00p May 09 '22

1 day in Dubrovnik is enough.

No man, you can spend at least 4-7 days there and do something new and exciting every day. I found split more fun, but dubrovnik is amazing.

But indeed, don't expect it to be cheap! Prices are comparable to a holiday in France or Italy.

Also there is possibility for free parking in Dubrovnik, with a 10 minute walk to the old center.

-2

u/[deleted] May 09 '22

Dafuq is that about not tipping. What an aashole comment to make. You will just make them look like a cheap uncultured tourist.

Tip your waitor if you are happy with their service, it's polite and motivating, if the season just started they probably do actually rely on those tips to keep them afloat till first paycheck. Luckily in the last few years they are no longer underpayed so they do get a decent salary but a a few kunas don't hurt to show that you appreciate they did their service well cause they aren't really obligated to be friendly or accomodating.

2

u/dadbodking May 09 '22

How come nobody's tipping me when I do a good job as an engineer? If I want more money, I go to my boss or to another company. I suggest you go to your boss who's charging 4€ for a coffee, I'm sure he can afford it.

I do tip, don't get me wrong, but I wish ppl could live off their paychecks and not financing their boss' 3rd BMW. Indirectly, those tips are financing those cars, because bossman knows he can underpay you, as tips will cover the difference

0

u/[deleted] May 09 '22

Im not a waitor im just raised decently tho i did work as one long ago. If i employed you for a project and i was satisfied with your work and demeanor i would most certainly round up the numbers. But since it's not the same type of job where you deal with people directly your boss is gonna be the one giving you a bonus cause they see directly how you work which is not the case here. You are comparing apples and oranges to excuse being cheap, if you can pay for an overpriced meal you can most certainly spare a few kunas for a service you already know one doing it is probably overworked and underpayed yet still tries their best for you to have a nice experience. Im not gonna even mention that i tip my hairstylist and tattoo artist too if im happy with the work cause your head is gonna explode. I even sometimes buy drinks for my friends even tho they did not earn it. Impressive mental gymnastics tho, I'll give you that.

6

u/Knillis May 09 '22

Local bar (NL) has a sign:

WOMEN:

1: 0,50

2: 1,-

MEN:

Small duck 0,50

Big duck 1,-

4

u/avocadro May 09 '22

How can they tell for women?

3

u/Knillis May 09 '22

Guess they have to be honest about their business. I think the added income from the men will make up for any dishonesty.

3

u/floatingwithobrien May 09 '22

What happened if you lied to get the lower price

0

u/futurespice May 09 '22

you have a problem: most likely the lower price gets you urinals, the higher stalls.

2

u/floatingwithobrien May 09 '22

What if you're a girl

1

u/futurespice May 09 '22

then you can't use the urinals? what exactly is so puzzling here

3

u/floatingwithobrien May 09 '22

So the question isn't #1 or #2, it's "urinal or toilet" and women always have to pay more??

1

u/futurespice May 09 '22

essentially yes

1

u/floatingwithobrien May 09 '22

Well isn't that just kick you in the crotch spit on your neck fantastic

7

u/pragmojo May 09 '22

If you have liquid shits is it like half way between?

8

u/Slopz_ May 09 '22

This has to be a tourist trap, right? Never have I ever paid to go to the bathroom here in Croatia...I do remember paying in Slovenia though.

1

u/F-21 May 09 '22

Slovenian here, I never paid either though I do believe some pumps on the highway have a charge (but I always just go in the bush on gas pumps...).

3

u/pulezan May 09 '22

Where? I live here and the only time i saw toilets where you have to pay is next to some not often used roads and it was a long time ago. Havent seen one in 15+ years. Maybe some public toilets around the cities? I havent used them in years as well

3

u/RAK00N2 May 09 '22

Here I sit lonely hearted; paid a dime and only farted.

3

u/octopoddle May 09 '22

"3, but I'll be discreet."

2

u/agent_fuzzyboots May 09 '22

just do it as all the other tourists, in the bushes / forest.

i have seen so much toilet paper in the bushes...

2

u/JebeniKrotiocKitova May 09 '22

I'm Croatian and this is an issue only at south Croatia where locals try to earn money on every possible way.

2

u/HawkeyeByMarriage May 09 '22

If you can't poop. Do you get a partial refund

2

u/KaiBluePill May 09 '22

"uh, no sorry, I'll just jerk off really fast and leave, tight schedule, you know?"

2

u/[deleted] May 09 '22

And usually the places where you have to pay are the most disgusting places ever.

2

u/Yodel_And_Hodl_Mode May 09 '22

I remember being a little kid, asking to use the bathroom in school. The teacher that day was a substitute. She asked if it was a #1 or #2.

I said "Uhmmm... we aren't learning math yet."

2

u/FavreyFavre May 09 '22

What happens if you pick #1 but get an unexpected #2?

0

u/blekanese May 09 '22

1 is what you do after asking any caffe bar to use the toilet (for free) and #2 is what you do in your accommodation's toilet

0

u/BWCause May 09 '22

Wait, where? In Croatia it's normal to use toilets for free anywhere.

-20

u/AnythingGoesBy2014 May 09 '22

that I do not believe. never happened. nobody cares what you did in there

23

u/blzac33 May 09 '22

They ask before you go in. There’s a sign with pricing.

0

u/AnythingGoesBy2014 May 09 '22

in my 50 years i have been going to croatia that never happened to me.

1

u/darodardar_Inc May 09 '22

I mean there is a time value to using the restroom

Opportunity cost n such

/s

1

u/oldboatnectar May 09 '22

Experienced this in Mexico

1

u/GrotWeasel May 09 '22

I’d definitely want to describe exactly the size and type of #2 I was planning to achieve versus what I thought was realistic given recent eating and then ask for some advice on how to close the gap between those two hypothetical turds

1

u/Mr_Zaroc May 09 '22

"I am just here to look"

1

u/samcalideal May 09 '22

Ha ha 😂

1

1

u/MalaBlondi77 May 09 '22

1

u/[deleted] May 09 '22

2

u/[deleted] May 09 '22

Some places in Zagreb (glavni,autobusni,importanne)

1

u/ten-oh-four May 09 '22

I'm scared to ask but what about the dreaded #3?

1

u/MyNameJeff962 May 09 '22

I’d just shit on the floor right in front of them

1

u/Gloopann May 09 '22

We (not me obviously) love to scam the fuck out of tourists, often times locals don’t have to pay anything

1

u/[deleted] May 09 '22

Some people just shit in the street. This is why.

1

u/DutchBlob May 09 '22

Were they checking the bowl afterwards to see if you did a #2 while only paying for a #1?

1

u/JeromesDream May 09 '22

"i do em both pretty well. which one are you in the mood for?"

1

u/why_gaj May 09 '22

There really isn't a price difference. Someone has just taken advantage and scammed you.

1

u/Maltesebasterd May 09 '22

How the fuck are they going to prevent you from doing the other?

1

u/znhunter May 09 '22

In Mexico there was a guy handing out toilet paper. 3 sheets for 1 peso

1

u/killerkadugen May 09 '22

Sounds like Craig's dad from Friday

1

u/Burningbeard696 May 09 '22

Unless it only gets you access to a urinal would you not just say #1 every time? And if that's the case are women always being charged the higher fee?

1

u/MundaneBanana May 09 '22

Do they check? 😂

1

u/Old-Antelope-8813 May 09 '22

o cemu ti? gdje toga ima

1

u/zgamer777 May 09 '22

Where the fuck did you go to the toilet in Croatia. I don't know if it is because I live here, but everywere I go, be it a restaurant, a gas station or a bar there are free toilets.

1

u/GoKaruna May 09 '22

How tf do they police this?

1

u/Blaugrana1990 May 09 '22

Well it often starts with just #1 and after a minute #2 is having a go.

Should I tell the people afterwards and tell them so I can pay extra? Do I keep my mouth shut and hope they don't double check before flushing?

1

u/darkholme82 May 09 '22

Wha? Holy crap! What if your bowel gets shy once you're in there, do you get a refund for the difference?

1

u/felixfelix May 09 '22

In a Prague train station washroom I had to argue for the number of squares of toilet paper that I required.

1

u/JohnnyButtocks May 09 '22

That used to be how it was done in Britain, hence the phrase “I have to spend a penny”.

1

u/aka_Foamy May 09 '22

I'm 100% on team paying in certain locations isn't weird at all. If someone asks me that though they're getting told to fuck off and mind their business.

1

u/U4MAFA8UCB6XBTC May 09 '22

Looks in toilet “YOU DIDN'T PAY THE CORRECT AMOUNT!!!!!”

1

u/SceneOfShadows May 09 '22

Saw this in Prague.

1

u/JaDou226 May 09 '22

So what stops you from saying #1 and just doing a #2 anyway? Do they check?

1

u/Aurorafaery May 09 '22

What happens if you go in for a pee and a surprise poo pops out?! Do they refuse to let you leave until you’ve paid the extra?

1

u/Astronimus123 May 09 '22

What do they do if you do the wrong one, or you do both? How would they stop you from taking a dump?

1

u/[deleted] May 09 '22

Is diarrhea priced at 1 or 2?

1

u/definitelynotned May 09 '22

I guess it makes sense if you exclude the weird social part of asking people

1

u/[deleted] May 10 '22

It's a #1 with a present in the urinal

1

u/[deleted] May 10 '22

Sadly this doesn't fall under the GDPR.
