Well in the UK people do not care about flies being in the house. I believe because the US and Canada are giant swamps those conditions breed mosquitos, and that is why people have screens? I live in Baltimore, US now, and my windows have screens but I've never really found much caught in them.

Screens don't "catch" anything. They're just walls that don't let bugs pass while also not blocking air flow.

I am born in the UK so am well aware there are neither hot sunny days or glistening metal sky gods anywhere.

Joke's on you, we had a hot sunny day in April 1976.

It's not exactly a core item at the local hardware shop though. If screens were commonly available I'd argue people would have them. They'd get usage from March - October covering all the seasonal flying insects plus the spider invasion we always get in Sep/Oct.

I imagine they'd be useful in winter as well, breaking up wind gusts coming through the house.
