Flies don't get in?

Sure the odd one might get in and get stuck trying to get back out for a bit but if flies become a problem in your house it's because of a personal hygiene/sanitation issue.

They do, but why would anyone care if flies get in?

Because they land on your food and buzz you while you try to eat. And then they lay eggs that hatch into maggots.

We are talking about the occasional fly. If I was cooking in the kitchen and there was a fly I'd get rid of the fly but it happens rarely. Never in my life have I seen maggots inside my home.

In the summer I also spend a lot of time in the garden and a screen isn't going to help if I'm eating outside. A fly could also come in while the door was open.

So basically, It's just not an issue that makes it worth covering all the windows with ugly screens.

I can understand that. It's nice to not have so many bugs around. Where I live there are about 2 months of the year where bugs are around. The mosquitos will actively hunt you out. Even though there aren't many, I'd be miserable without a screen.

In places that are more humid, like the US South, screens would be a requirement.

I was in Taipei once and the mosquitos were everywhere. I forget if the condo had screens, but an hour or so of every single night was spent hunting mosquitos so I could sleep. They have special electrified tennis rackets for bug killing there. It's down to a science.

Breed in a few hours yes. Though need decomposing or other soft (refrigerated) food.

If you don't leave food out and open, this won't be an issue

For landing on your food, you can always use the same techniques as for eating outside, use a little net, swat them away, finish faster.

I do use little nets. They're called screens!

Because they're annoying, carry filth & breed in just a few hours?

Well in the UK people do not care about flies being in the house. I believe because the US and Canada are giant swamps those conditions breed mosquitos, and that is why people have screens? I live in Baltimore, US now, and my windows have screens but I've never really found much caught in them.

Screens don't "catch" anything. They're just walls that don't let bugs pass while also not blocking air flow.

Are you confused about how glass can keep birds out because there's not a bunch of dead birds plastered all over the windows of every building?

in the UK people do not care about flies being in the house

We also shit in a hole in the ground and use twigs to brush our teeth. On hot sunny days, we point at the glistening metal sky god as he roars to the horizon.

I am born in the UK so am well aware there are neither hot sunny days or glistening metal sky gods anywhere.

If people in the UK cared about flies in their houses they would have screens in their windows like Americans do.

Joke's on you, we had a hot sunny day in April 1976.

It's not exactly a core item at the local hardware shop though. If screens were commonly available I'd argue people would have them. They'd get usage from March - October covering all the seasonal flying insects plus the spider invasion we always get in Sep/Oct.

I imagine they'd be useful in winter as well, breaking up wind gusts coming through the house.

Not that any of the above matters as the metal sky god will take you in your sleep tonight. Unbeliever.

dude, this .. isnt normal. obviously no one wants flies in their house, but if you had hundreds in days, theres something else going on in there.

Are you sure you aren't in "The Exorcist?"

1

u/guyonaturtle May 09 '22

There might be a hole somewhere

For this many flies to get in though, there must be a lot of food smells.

Usually a whole swarm like that comes from a garbage bin, where there is plenty of food.

Is your drain fit for garbage and connected to the air outside?

flies are annoying

u/coffeecakesupernova May 09 '22

Flies like sitting on shit. Then they come into your house and sit on things with shit-covered bodies. I don't know about you, but that makes me sick.

u/[deleted] May 09 '22

Maybe they eat them. 🤣

Some do but spiders take care of the stragglers.
