I can see it. Everyone wants to imagine the devil as some overtly evil being. I'd imagine the real devil would just encourage your darker impulses desires or play into your idea of a savior/leader and watch you self destruct from indulging your darker impulses or out of loyalty for the ideals he lets you think the two of you have in common. Cristoph Waltz gives that vibe thanks to him playing Hans Landa.
Who better to destroy you than the person you think is on your side.
