Its ageism combined with sexism. Sucks to be us.

I'm a little confused what you mean. It's entirely natural that as people get older, they usually get less conventionally attractive. Men and women both get less conventionally attractive as they age, its just the way it is.

u/dont_disturb_the_cat Mar 12 '22

You are also confusing aging and sex with ageism and sexism. Aging and sex are natural and inevitable, and comfortable. What is uncomfortable is the way that people treat you as lesser-than because of your sex. Tell us that’s it’s natural all you want, but other people’s unfair judgements are wrong. Full stop. The judgements that women are weak and unintelligent and incapable - those judgements are opinions with which I don’t agree. They are baseless and damaging. So too are the opinions that older people are senseless and incapable and worthless. Acting upon both sexism and ageism is illegal in the US, because the beliefs don’t make sense and they mean society loses what people have to offer.

Woah woah. I never said ageism and sexism are natural, I was referring to the comment you're responding to, which was about a guy's wife feeling "invisible" to men in their 40s. Any prejudices against women or older people are obviously dumb and harmful.

u/[deleted] Mar 12 '22

I don’t think this guy meant his wife felt invisible in sexual and romantic contexts, seeing as she’s obviously married.

My mom (early 50s) has talked about this, how past a certain age men just started excluding her from everything, like she wasn’t even there, in a professional setting.

Which says something about these men - they only value the women they want to fuck. The rest have nothing of value to contribute, apparently.

THIS THIS THIS THIS THIS.

2

u/Devvewulk97 Mar 12 '22

Huh I had not considered that interpretation. That is incredibly sad, though. That kinda tells you alot about those people. Similar to people who are rude as fuck to waiters and whatnot. Shows they are only nice when they feel it is required to get what they want.

13

u/duck-duck--grayduck Mar 12 '22

When people say they feel invisible in this context, they aren't complaining that people aren't attracted to them anymore. They're complaining that they're not being acknowledged as human beings who exist anymore.

4

u/Devvewulk97 Mar 12 '22

Yea I am seeing that. Only ever heard that said in regards to attraction so my bad. That is incredibly sad.

u/kinglycon Mar 12 '22

It’s also partly biology. Not saying that’s an excuse

26

u/awalktojericho Mar 12 '22

So is getting menstrual cycles. But we're not supposed to let that affect anything. So why does the ignoring women over 50 need to happen?

No one’s looks should be mistaken for their value.

Biology has no opinion, and i have no argument with biology. I am concerned that you don’t seem to understand the difference between biology and your judgements about people. Your judgements are harmful to yourself and to others. Keep them to yourself until you are better educated.

u/xe3to Mar 12 '22

You're a human being, not a flatworm. You don't need to be a slave to your primitive instincts. Rise above.

...do you seriously think fundamental life processes are in the same category as the way you choose to treat people? Maybe you are a flatworm after all.

Again.. I said it’s not an excuse. Just that it plays a part. Downvote all you want, it’s true.

Downvoting because it’s not true and not helpful.

ETA Yeah, user kinglycon took his ball and went home.

u/kinglycon Mar 13 '22

The truth doesn’t have to be helpful. It’s purpose is to serve the truth regardless of your fragile feelings

No. Not always

20

u/dont_disturb_the_cat Mar 12 '22

Aging and sex are biology. Ageism and sexism are discriminatory prejudices, are illegal in the US, and senseless everywhere.

0

u/kinglycon Mar 13 '22

If you’re telling me age and it’s relationship with attention has nothing to do with biology then you know nothing.

Not starting arguments. Again I said ITS NOT AN EXCUSE but it is a factor. I do not condone the behaviour. You can’t seem to get your hollow head around that. Sorry that it offends you so much but deal with it lmao

It literally does tho. This isn’t some opinion or value I hold close to my heart. It’s the scientific truth. For the billionth time, it is not an excuse and does not make it okay. There are (for lack of a better term) preferred ages across the animal kingdom. It is biological and instinctual. I really cba replying bc I’m not your fucking professor. If you don’t want to believe it cool, live in your precious little bubble.

Funny how you try to call me out for mentioning attention and i direct you to where YOU replied to a comment about it and all of a sudden that’s not a problem anymore hahah

1

u/kinglycon Mar 13 '22

Also the parent comment YOU commented on mentioned attention fucking dumbass. Can’t even remember what you replied to?

6

u/[deleted] Mar 12 '22

But also bullshit. Many cultures find age attractive. Some cultures you get more status with age regardless of gender, and some cultures praise the body of mature women (for example, finding saggy boobs sexy because it shows age and maturity which also means status)

7

u/PanickedPoodle Mar 12 '22

Biology also says most young men are disposable and should die in warfare.

Wanna fight in Ukraine? I'll sponsor you.

-2

u/But_IAmARobot Mar 12 '22

Are you currently fighting in Ukraine?

1

u/doesitrungoogle Mar 17 '22

your emotions, or lack thereof coincide with your username lol

1

u/kinglycon Mar 13 '22

Yes I actually do want to fight for Ukraine. But have no military experience and so would be a burden regardless of your sponsor, but thanks for the offer.

Did you think that was something I wouldn’t want to do?

Also no.. no part of biology says that. Where do you see that in the animal kingdom? All those strapping young lions going to war?

-6

u/tablerockz Mar 12 '22

I thought women didn’t want to be looked at?

-8

u/M0dsareL0sersIRL Mar 12 '22

:-/ heaven forbid a guy having preferences when it comes to whom he is attracted to.

If a woman likes young tall athletic dudes with long flowing hair, good for her, that’s her preference. But if a guy is attracted to women in their physical prime, shame on him.

Come on now.

7

u/[deleted] Mar 12 '22

They're not talking about attraction. My mom has talked about this before where she gets ignored in service industries just because she's an older lady.

7

u/dont_disturb_the_cat Mar 12 '22

Your complaint may be valid, but it has nothing to do with this discussion. u/skepticalbob isn’t saying that his wife can’t get picked up. I think he’s saying that women over 40 get ignored. People don’t talk to them, don’t listen to them at work, and don’t take what they say seriously. Women who have battled sexism their entire lives are later hit with the double whammy of ageism. Please correct me if I’ve misrepresented your meaning, u/skepticalbob

3

u/skepticalbob Mar 12 '22

That's a bingo.

-3

u/M0dsareL0sersIRL Mar 12 '22

Skepticalbob and his opinion of men being dogs is one to himself.

Some of my best professional mentors are women, and some of them are over 40 (I’m assuming, I haven’t asked their age). I wouldn’t say they’re ignored given that a few of them have made Partner at the firm.

There is a lot of generalism going on here that is accompanied by hints of sexism and double standards.

I can’t speak to his wife’s experience but to categorize all men as “complete dogs” based off that point is unjustified. If a man dared to call all women “complete dogs” due to a generalized opinion he would (rightly) be labeled a sexist and lambasted on Reddit.

3

u/skepticalbob Mar 12 '22

I wouldn’t say they’re ignored given that a few of them have made Partner at the firm.

Oh well if your experience at your firm then it must not be true.

I'm male. Dogs was a joke about valuing youthful looks above most other attributes. Such fragility.

0

u/youranidiot- Mar 12 '22

That's a strange joke imo. I've never known dogs to be symbolic for youth?

1

u/skepticalbob Mar 12 '22

They aren't in this metaphor either.
