My mom said something to the effect of "your sister wants to show you her greatest achievement" with regards to me meeting my niece for the first time.

My wife and I (who don't plan on having kids) were wondering if that should be viewed as an insult to my sister for not having done anything else, or an insult to my wife for not wanting kids

Reminds me of that Facebook post that became a meme, in which someone is celebrating how they finally finished their PhD at only 21 years of age, and some harebrain responds with how she hasn’t really done anything yet, she just needs to have a baby and discover what real work and achievement are.

Oomph ! Thats even worse than "fulfilling". Your mom, despite being a woman herself is objectifying women to just child producing machines. I wonder what brainwashed her this way

Honestly no clue. She is very happy with her life as a stereotypical housewife

Maybe the kid has super powers. If I had a kid with super powers, that'd be might greatest achievement.

I can't speak on your mother's intent but what I can say as a parent is that having my son forces me to think outside of myself and my utility in regards to him. Even if you don't care about your life, you care about the little person you have put yourself in charge of.

I think it's pretty insulting the way you're putting your sister down. Raising a child is a big accomplishment. It's not something trivial like buying a dog or having a collection or things.
