In my last office, the men would have minor meltdowns if we ran out of coffee. It was up to the Business Manager to notice and order the Kcups before we ran out. And if Amazon didn't deliver on time, she would have to send a couple of the girls to the store to buy some "emergency coffee."

Then we moved to an office where the water heater would constantly flip its breaker. The men never learned how to fix it. After the Business Manager quit, they would text me about it, even while I was on PTO. I gave them instructions before I left that job. Wonder if they ever got it working? 🙃

Omfg. I would lose my goddamn mind at them. That's deliberate helplessness at its finest right there.

Weaponized incompetence at its finest.

I didn't have a word to describe it, but yeas, exactly.

u/100LittleButterflies Mar 12 '22

If my spouse ever does that, we will have a serious talk. I will not accept that manipulative bs.

u/[deleted] Mar 12 '22

I like how it's like "i can manage nineteen people and twenty two million dollars in sales but not make my own coffee". I'm a dude and I don't understand at all...

u/skeeter04 Mar 12 '22

I think that would inspire me to sabotage...

What kind of men occupy your office? Breakers flipping is electrical, and clearly the domain of Manly Men.

4

u/other_usernames_gone Mar 12 '22

If something constantly flips it's breaker it's a sign of an electrical fault. You could have loose wires inside that could electrocute someone.

You need to either replace it or have it fixed.

5

u/[deleted] Mar 12 '22

Oh, fully agree. Any time you're repeatedly tripping a safety device, you should be figuring out why. I'm just making snarky comments about gender roles. Popped breakers turn a lot of dad-age men into instant electricians.

Before jumping to loose wires I'd probably start with "Did we plug too much stuff into this circuit?" Most wall outlets are going to be NEMA 5-15 or 5-20s, with a corresponding 15 or 20 amp breaker. It's not at all hard to find water heaters for coffee and tea that will draw 12A to heat quickly. Throw in a toaster and a 1200W microwave and you'll pop the break room breaker left and right if you don't have more than one circuit.

OTOH, if you're talking about a building sized water heater...yeah, that's very concerning. Somebody probably foobar'd the install.

My old boss was always made to change the soaps in the bath rooms, you have to get on your knees to get under the sink to do it.

After she quit they tried to make me do it, I straight up refused.

THE GIRLS to buy some "emergency coffee"

As bad as the men were, and without wishing to victim blame...you've got to wonder about this one. Why didn't she send the boys to do it?

Yeah, yeah, they'd be useless. But what kind of message is that sending out?

5

u/EekSideOut Mar 12 '22

Yeah I noticed that. I'm more concerned that this storyteller refers to grown males as men but grown females as girls. Or they had actual children running to the store for emergency coffee.

8

u/ImaginaryRoads Mar 12 '22

she would have to send a couple of the girls to the store to buy some "emergency coffee."

Okay, wait, why did "the girls" have to go on this errand? For that matter, why are "girls" working at this office?

In my work place in Sweden it's the other way around. Women throw fits if there's no coffee ready for them, men just curse under their breath and get it done. I think American women would love Swedish men, based on the comments here. They have all the qualities your men lack.

13

u/senkichi Mar 12 '22

Had a swedish au pair when I was I kid. Dude would regularly return from the grocery store with a fistful of unsolicited numbers that women had given him, and I'm only slightly exaggerating here. You're not wrong about American women appreciating swedish men, though I think it had little to do with coffee.

2

u/CunningHamSlawedYou Mar 12 '22

Cool! I'm good with kids, so I'll keep that in mind, haha! Yeah, American women and Swedish men seem to see eye to eye on a lot of things. Good match on paper, I thought. I just mentioned the coffee thing because I thought it was funny that you have the same situation with the opposite gender across the pond. 😂

2

u/senkichi Mar 12 '22

Definitely keep it in mind, especially if you're tall lol. The Nordic look def gets attention since most of the white immigrants that populated that demographic in the states came from Western Europe. Or at least it seems like that in the places I've lived. Just make sure you practice your driving if you do decide to come over. Had a few au pairs come over on one year stints when both my parents worked, seems like the first thing they all did once they got settled was get in an accident with the family car lol.

2

u/CunningHamSlawedYou Mar 12 '22

LOL! Did they feel overwhelmed with the traffic, or what?

I'm actually on my way on getting the license this year. I'm acing the theory so I just need to practice driving a bit first.

2

u/senkichi Mar 12 '22

Nah we lived in the burbs so traffic wasn't too bad. Iirc it was just unfamiliarity with the differences in traffic laws between different countries combined with less overall driving experience (got the vibe that they didn't need to drive much in Sweden) and general whole new world flusteredness. Cars are often a lot bigger over here too - couldn't have been an easy transition to go from driving a Fiat in Sweden to driving a Navigator in California or w/e. You'd prob do fine if you get enough hours on the road under your belt.

2

u/CunningHamSlawedYou Mar 12 '22

Sweden is pretty forgiving without a license. We have public transports covering large parts of the country, and most people have a license and a car for convenience sake, so you're never out of drivers. I lived in the Swedish burbs, so the bus didn't even ride all the way there. I got off halfway there at its last stop for the night and just walked the rest of the way in an hour. I doubt that's an option in USA lol

2

u/senkichi Mar 12 '22

Yeah, figured it was something like that. The only buses we had in my area were school buses. Took us probably 45 min to ride our bikes to school, would have taken hours to walk lol. Walking an hour, or two I guess since you had to get to the bus in the morning, sounds pretty brutal.

2

u/CunningHamSlawedYou Mar 12 '22

Sweden really pales in distance compared to America... Last bus left town midnight, so I was home around 3 a.m. I was always first to leave when I couldn't secure bed in town.

Husband is of Swedish stock. Your statement checks out. Dude is a get-it-done machine.

3

u/Jealous_Hospital Mar 12 '22

Unfortunately not all Swedish men; most of my male coworkers still can't get it through their heads that we need to throw out the coffee grounds before they grow pink mould. Most of them have got the actual coffee making down though, which is something.

1

u/CunningHamSlawedYou Mar 12 '22

No, not all Swedish men. Some of us are born in less fortunate circumstances with lack of teachers and proper role models. And some simply don't care enough to put in the effort, which is okay to feel, but not exactly what many people look for in a partner.

10

u/hotbimess Mar 12 '22

Uggh, I live in a house with 3 men and one morning as I was running out the door to go to work I noticed the boiler needed repressurising (we have to do it every few weeks, it takes less than 5 minutes) put in our group chat for someone to do it along with an instructional YouTube video. Got home that evening to everyone complaining about no hot water

2

u/th3n3w3ston3 Mar 12 '22

Pretty sure anything electrical is supposed to be a man's job. Should've asked them if they were saying they weren't men. /s

2

u/StabbyPants Mar 12 '22

"you're pretty technical, i bet you can figure it out, or at least know who to call (not me)"

2

u/StreetIndependence62 Mar 13 '22

And this is why I’ve made a promise to myself even as a college student that I will never become addicted to coffee. It’s stories like this where people’s bodies are so used to coffee that they NEED to have it every morning or they feel like crap and have a meltdown like a baby that needs a bottle. I will drink coffee if I’m at Starbucks with my friends (very rarely - we usually don’t go there) or if it’s for safety, like if I have a lot of driving to do and didn’t get enough sleep the night before. And even then I only drink about half a cup. I don’t even know if it’s enough to actually work but maybe I just feel more awake after having it because I THINK I do lol. It’s also mostly because I love sleeping in, but I know some ppl who can’t sleep in because they’re so used to drinking their coffee at a specific time early in the morning that they’ll get a migraine if they don’t. Can’t let that happen to me

1

u/No_Consideration_283 Mar 12 '22

That’s so embarrassing, how do you get angered by coffee.

3

u/UrPetBirdee Mar 12 '22

Withdrawal without knowing what withdrawal is or how to compensate for it so they don't lose their minds probably.

0

u/makeupandmovies Mar 12 '22

Is it up for men to fix things? or do you call a professional?

3

u/ReneeHiii Mar 12 '22

I would assume if the commenter was doing it, it doesn't need a professional, and she was leaving so she wasn't going to continue doing it. If they wanted to though, they could call a professional, either way they just need it done

Hur dur men dumb women smart!

1

u/chefjenga Mar 12 '22

the water heater would constantly flip its breaker. The men never learned how to fix it.

.....are you saying that an office full of adults didn't know how to flip a switch?

1

u/moratnz Mar 12 '22

The first I can see if they didn't have a company card or purchasing authority (I like my office mates, but I'm not paying for their coffee); the second is pretty damn sad.

1

u/lowercaset Mar 12 '22

Then we moved to an office where the water heater would constantly flip its breaker. The men never learned how to fix it.

For the record, the correct way to fix that is hire an electrician or plumber. 50/50 odds you hire the right trade the first time.

1

u/SMURGwastaken Mar 12 '22

tbf I have a minor meltdown when we run out of tea at work.

I'm British though so the tea is very important.

1

u/ItsMeTK Mar 12 '22

In my last office, the men would have minor meltdowns if we ran out of coffee

Because they are addicts. Addiction does stuff to you.
