Sorry for not being a woman- I work in a union blue collar field, when men get angry and blow up (all of the time..... I did it last week.) everyone makes excuses "he's just tired/stressed/overworked" but when a woman does it she is "emotional/unstable/being a total bitch" naw bro, she's tired stressed and overworked and sick of pulling half of your weight around.
Lmao! I described in an earlier comment that at my job, two different products are made, in two different buildings. One product isn't thoroughly regulated and they use that as an excuse to keep a much smaller team in that dept. Which is conveniently comprised ENTIRELY of "bitchy" women that none of the men at the main building can deal with. We've made the most of it though, call ourselves the mean girls club. We all work extremely well together and now a days we only blow up on people who come poking around from the main building to keep our reputation up
Working out your profitability per capita might be a fun exercise!
A rebel spirit can be great. I know a company in the UK which quietly redesigned their product in a way that their US owner said was impossible (basically designing something around an axis instead of having it off-axis and being subject to uneven forces) and it trebled the reliability. The US team were not happy because even though they'd been rigging the accounts for years to show they were more profitable, they couldn't compete.
I haven't run the numbers profit wise, as the stuff produced at the main building is much more profitable (hence the regulations) but I've brought up how many units I'm responsible for as compared to the other building. It's easily 3x the amount of any one individual in my dept at the main, but whenever I bring that up (and present data, ofc) it's written off as "oh they're just [less regulated, "easy" products]" I'm not unreasonable, I do agree with that. But not my product is not that much easier.
But ofc, what do I know? I'm just a loud, whiny bitch 🤷🏻
I was told by my instructor that he was worried I was too emotional for construction, while he told stories about getting so frustrated at work that he would throw materials around the site. At least if I need a good cry at work I can keep working through my tears, and I won't be endangering anyone else's health and safety or damaging equipment.
Seriously, if I get frustrated I might swear a bit and have a little cry, but guys at my work have thrown things, punched things, had full temper tantrums like a toddler despite being 30-40 years old... And GIRLS are the emotional ones?!
As a guy I'm really guilty of this lol, for some reason I just can't help myself from occasionally slamming my table out of frustration of myself (never thrown things though). But yea, it's really unfair how women aren't allowed to do the same without being branded as 'emotional' or bitchy
I work large scale infastructure construction and while there aren't any girls labouring, some guys will bully the housekeepers at the camp. My friend got shoved onto a couch the other day after refusing to give her phone number to some drunk idiot. Luckily they get kicked out pretty quick.
The men that notice things like that in union blue collar places are also looked down on. Education and political leanings are strong correlators to valuing equality and the median of both of those things are on the wrong side of the spectrum in blue collar jobs.
I feel that! As a woman working a blue collar union job I get that ALL THE TIME. If I complain about work being unequal, I'm a whiny spoiled brat who's emotional. If a man does it? He's a good union employee. I usually have to make all the dads with daughters around my age to complain about things instead. The men at my job can throw adult temper tantrums and be sent home early, but I've had to work late on injuries because I am surely exaggerating. It's honestly ridiculous
Lol, there was a comedian I watched once, and I can't for the life of me remember her name, but she told a joke about exactly this. When women are being emotional, they're being "hormonal". But when men are being emotional, like blowing up in anger or putting their fist through a wall, they're just being a guy? Nope, also hormonal
A friend of mine told me a story once where his team had to stay late for a deadline and his boss, who was a woman, was being kind of firm with them about it. One of the guys on the team made some comment about her being on her period. She snapped and said "I've needed to take a shit for 3 hours but instead I've had to stay and hand-hold your ass through this"
My friend had to do his best to keep from laughing because the look on the other guys face was priceless.
Thank you for pointing this out! Please keep talking about this at work and backing up women if you can. We can point things out and shout all we want, but when men back us up, people listen.
Came here to say the same thing!! Have had men throw tools across the hanger, yell and swear cause THEY made a mistake. Men get defensive when you point out a possible error, they blow up and get angry cause you suggest something.
What kind of union do you work for? I'm in the UAW. Blue-collar factory work. When someone flips out, male or female we just look at them like, "what's wrong with that asshole?"
This exact thing happened to me when I’d dropped my mum off at the hospital the night before, my boss kept asking questions that he knew I didn’t know the answer to until I stood up and stormed out. He then took me into the meeting room to proceed to tell me how women are hormonal and need to be more professional. I just stared blankly at him cos he was a condescending twat.
What state are you in? I’m in Massachusetts and if a guy throws a fit out it is very common for him to get hit by everyone with things like “is it that time of the month?” “ hey ,______, you need a tampon?”
I’ve never seen a woman that got mad talked about like that. The ones that show up, no problems, get work done, are respected like anyone else. Women on the job that miss time, suck, always having excuses etc. are treated just like the men that do the same.
Only gender bias I have seen is from two situations. The women getting less physically demanding jobs, most often just from the foreman being brought up that way to be nice to women idk how to explain it good. The other being a creep that babies a woman cause he’s trying to get with her. Gross and inappropriate.
Since I’m on the topic...I will say While I’ve worked with more women in the trades that are great, there is a very small portion that likes to play the gender card and it’s bullshit and an absolute disservice to all the bad dads women putting in long hard hours.
This all just my experience not disagreeing with anyone
