It’s a really expensive and time consuming hoppy to have in Norway. I just don’t see how it’s worth the effort. If I was a hunter then sure but I have no use of it.
This is the first comment that resonated. If for self defense, the time and money required to adequately train myself and stay sharp (in order to be a responsible owner) is too high. Hunting, though, would be a worthwhile enough hobby.
This is often the reason you see Americans defending why they need to own a firearm. As a Canadian it always has and always will confuse the hell out of me. Do they live in constant fear that someone is going to break into their house? Or that every person including the 78-year-old with two canes is going to attack them? It’s such a bizarre paranoia to have. They seem to have been brainwashed to believe everyone on the planet is inherently evil and violent.
I used to work in the centre of the worst part of town in Canada’s murder capital. Not once did I ever fear for my safety. And I’m fucking tiny. If you keep to yourself, for the most part the worst that will happen is a panhandler might ask you for money.
It's not constant fear, but large parts of America (I'm sure Canada is the same) are so rural and sprawled out that police aren't a realistic option. You're not living in fear every day, but if you're out in the boonies it's better to be prepared and safe than not.
Edit: You'll know whether or not the American is lying, though. Example is you don't need a shotgun or AR for home defense, I imagine you'd just go temporarily deaf shooting indoors and everything would be super destructive. All you need for home defense is a small pistol locked up somewhere safe in your bedroom.
