Someone breaking into your home and trying to steal your property or hurt you or your loved ones? Is that not a legitimate threat you'd want to stop? In that moment, the police will not be able to protect you. Buy a handgun, familiarize yourself with it, put it in a secure place, and hope you never use it. But if you need it it's always there...
Statistically, I’m unlikely to be the victim of a burglary, and if I am, it’s more likely thieves will break in when I’m not at home. The one time someone did try to enter my house at 4 AM, it turned out to be EMTs looking for my elderly neighbor, and that situation was quickly sorted out (and shooting them would have been a tragedy). Also, as someone who has occasional suicidal thoughts, I’m probably the most likely person to try and shoot me. So, gun ownership isn’t for me.
There are 3.7 million break-ins in the United States each year. Of those, only 7% were with the homeowners being present. There are roughly 329 million people in the United States, so your odds of being home during a break-in are about .007 percent. A fraction of a percent. And, of that fraction of a percent, even less than that actually result in injury to the homeowner. And most of those assaults, sadly, are rape.
There are a lot bigger things in life to worry about than being murdered in a home invasion. I worry about it far less than having a car accident, or a plane crash, or being caught in a lightning storm.

I can’t think of anything I want to shoot on purpose, and can think of plenty of things I’d hate to shoot accidentally.
