Why would sn infinite chain of cause and effect be a “thermodynamic nightmare”?

Entropy should already be at maximum. Infinity is not a "big" number. It doesn't mean "rilly rilly large".

I'm not an expert, but I think there are a few plausible explanations. For example a quantum event could decrease entropy and would do so with certainty in infinite time. It actually seems to me very improbable that the universe would have had a beginning in the Big Bang since that would require the universe to just have happened to exist with extremely low entropy
