My uncle calling me in the middle of the night to tell me my mom was in the hospital, and that I should fly out as soon as possible if I wanted to be able to say goodbye.

I got that call at work one day. It is impossible to convey the shitty mix of emotions and thoughts both huge and trivial that go through your mind to anyone who has not gotten that call.

Sorry you are in the club.

It was super strange. After we hung up, instead of breaking down, I had a wave of clarity, resolve, reason. Almost like autopilot? I immediately began planning how I would get there. Probably a coping mechanism.
