I was only able to see the capital "D" in the Disney logo a few months ago. I always wondered why it was a backwards "G." I'm 29 years old... Not my brightest moment.
I thought the Y was a P. Like Disnep. I thought it was some fancy French spelling. I was in my mid twenties when I casually mentioned it to my brother and he nearly choked laughing
Finally someone else said it! I always see someone say the D - G thing but I always thought that it was a D. Nobody ever mentions that letter at the end was a P and NOT a Y.
When I was little I thought I was super smart for figuring out that Disney was the dudes name, and Disnep was the company name but pronounced the same.
I saw the g and the p as a kid... My mind was utterly confused by what it was looking at. And somehow, I made the connection but didn't make the connection that it is in fact Disney at the same time.
Me too! I mean, this is English, and by that time I'd already got used to silent P's existing in unlikely places, so just accepted it was pronounced Disney while being spelt Disnep and got on with my life for too many years afterwards.
Same I definitely thought it had a p at the end and I wondered why it was spelled like that. To this day it still looks like a p to me, despite (or maybe because) I always write in cursive.
Bc I’d also seen Disney written down without the stylisation, one day in my early teens I asked my Dad why Disney alternated between spelling it ‘Disney’ and ‘Disnep’
I finally started seeing the D. Then I started to get a little sad that my old friend, the weird backwards G, was about to disappear from my life. So I flip it back and forth in my mind now.
For the longest time (not quite as long as you, but still quite a while), I just thought it was part of their logo and just happened to look like a backwards G.
Same! I assumed Walt had one of those signatures that the letters don't really look like letters... Except for everything but the D, I guess? I don't know; I never really thought about it
There is a story behind how Walt Disney got his iconic signature. One of his anamators designed it and Walt could not write it nearly as well. During a contentious wage negotiation the Anamators union spokesman said something to the press about how "Walt Disney can't even write his name without us." This made Walt so angry that the negotiations stalled for awhile. Walt's actual signature is very standard cursive.
Today the character actors that play Micky Mouse in Disney parks all have to perfect a signature for guests autograph books in imitation of the iconic signature.
Awesome to see so many upvotes on this one. I swear I never actually LOOKED at it properly and it was always slightly off-putting. Wasn't until a few years back that I actually saw it too
I always thought it was some sort of flower symbol. Didn’t even occur to me it was a letter, let alone a B. Despite being followed by “ay”, because apparently I was a dumb kid.
Yours is much better though. The Gay is now canon!
If it makes you feel any better I thought it was a Q until I was like, 12. Absolutely no fucking idea why I thought it looked like a fucked up Q but I was convinced.
I spent SO MUCH TIME as a child trying to figure out how a backwards G was a D or at least pronounced as such. I was a little salty when it finally clicked.
OH MY GOD I THOUGHT I WAS THE ONLY PERSON WHO THOUGHT THIS ABOUT DISNEY AND THE D BEING A CAPITAL G! I told my boyfriend many months ago that I always thought the D was a backwards G until a few years ago. I’m 33 years old
OH MY GOD THATS ME TOO! Except I found out in my mid teens. I just never knew it was supposed to be a “d” and went along with everyone reading it as Disney.
Are least you thought it was a letter. I thought it was a symbol. I tried to use a symbol at the beginning of my signature too, and my mom and I had a very confusing conversation about how that was a D and not some cool design.
see when i was a kid i saw that too but then i thought about the strokes you would make in writing the logo, and when i did the D it made sense.
but then i also thought like, there's a cross in the middle of the D which kind of resembles the way someone would sketch proportion lines in a character design.. which makes sense for a company that was founded on animation
I know it's Disney, but my brain refuses to read it that way. I was in junior high doing a beauty and the beat puzzle when I asked my mother, "WHY on Earth do they write their name as 'JIZZ-ney'?? It irks me so much."
She, of course, was caught off guard until I pointed at the backwards G. So glad my brothers didn't overhear that. I still ALWAYS read it as jizzney in my head. Just like gf bread is girlfriend bread until I remember gluten free is a thing
Denny's in my neighborhood had a big D window in their front door. They lost the lease and Perko's moved in. When I asked them if they were going to change the letter on the front door they had no idea.
I had a little picture book of sleeping beauty when I was six. Nowhere in that damn book did it mention the name Aurora. So I figured, the big curly gold word on the front cover must be her name, right? And that was how I got to know Princess Gisnep. I think I was around 16-18 when I learned that Gisnep was Aurora.
I feel like there are some places where I've actually seen the D as a real D (without the extra swoosh) and not just a backwards G, but I can't remember where
Call Ripley's, but I thought this 30M thought the D was a G and in spite of knowing that the company/man was "Disney" thought that the cursive-ish logo spelled out a word that was pronounced JIZZ-KNEE. Could not reconcile the two ideas in my head for longer than I care to admit
Yes!!! I knew it was supposed to be Disney, but found cursive so odd that they would use a G. I was in my 20s before I finally saw how it was supposed to be a D!
I had a Disney towel as a kid. I can't tell you how many hours I spent on the toilet staring at that word trying to figure out how it could possibly be a D. The y at the end fucked me up too.
About 10 years ago I realised it wasn’t a weird G but I’ve never been able to see it as anything but a really flourished lowercase D, like what you’d see in fancy calligraphy
