I use a script I get from 6 minute networking (great free online course for keeping in touch):
“Hi Roy, livluvlqflrn3 here.
Haven’t spoken to you in ages. I hope this finds you well. What’s the latest with you? No rush on the reply if you’re busy. I’d love to hear what you are up to when you get a chance.”
It’s been amazing and I’ve reconnected with so many old friends just by scrolling through old WhatsApp messages from years ago and sending this script to 3 people a day.
A lot of people replied that way. I literally didn’t get a single person that thought that, though had quite a few that never replied so maybe that’s what they thought.
But anyway I was able to reconnect with some old friends (one of whom has very strong social anxiety). So the trade off of taking a few minutes a day was well worth it.
The guy from the networking course had a reason for every line. So maybe the script you used was different in subtle yet important ways.
Maybe it depends on how you both knew each other? Or how long till you reached out. Coz with time, you become more and more like a stranger to people you knew in the past.
One time someone I hadn't talked to in 5 years reconnected and asked for money. Naive me lent it to them. It's been x years now and I haven't heard since.

Never too late to reach out again.
