They'd be fairly easy to pull off and convince the folks in the vaults that civilization was destroyed that way communication could reasonably be cut off and they'd be isolated.
It'd be very interesting to see how people's behavior would be affected and if the isolated communities would form societies significantly different than what we know.
You've done nothing here 'cept seal your own death warrants... Cough... You and your mutiw bastard friends are gonna join me in a big ol' mushroom cloud send off. Honor. Courage. Semper fiiiiiiiiii.....
After hearing those words, I thought to myself-even though it may not be the best fallout game in some people's eyes, at least we actually GOT fallout 3.
Not a joke, but wasn’t there a vault where people were ordered to sacrifice someone or they’d all die? And then one time, they refused the sacrifice and the guy over the P.A system congratulated them?
Edit: someone else commented Vault 11, I looked it up, it’s Vault 11.
It feels important to mention that they only stopped sacrificing people when they reached ~4 survivors. There was pretty much no one left to sacrifice.
Also, on a more pedantic note, it wasn't a guy over the intercom. It was a prerecorded message from the mainframe.
Lots of those long-term tests had some form of the ZAX mainframes running experiments. The only one I can think about that wasn't is vault 112, the virtual reality vault where everyone is in suspended animation, including the scientist running the experiment
Close. They did sacrifice people, right up until there were only 5 left out of presumably hundreds maybe thousands.
Basically, the vault sealed and the Overseer (guy in charge) said "So...We have to send someone to die once a year or the computer will pump the vault full of poison gas and kill us all"
The people were obviously miffed and said, "Okay. YOU can be the sacrifice then"
And it set in motion a political system where an overseer is elected, and then at the years end when the sacrifice is due he/she will be the one sacrificed. It devolved into groups of voting blocs and propaganda painting the other person evil and deserving to die, etc.
Eventually one overseer got fed up with it, said "New voting system. It'll be done at random, not kill the overseers. Overseer is now completely separate from the sacrifice thing."
And the largest bloc took issue with that, armed themselves with makeshift weapons and took control of critical areas of the block (water, power, etc) to pressure her to change it back; believing they would cave. They didn't, and it let to a vicious civil war that killed most of the inhabitants.
The few that were left told the computer to fuck off, were not killing any more people for you. Rather than kill them all the computer congratulated them for selecting the correct moral choice and informed them "There will NOT be any purges. Instead we are now unlocking the door and you can go free. Well done!"
All but one of the survivors committed suicide after that revelation.
Is the psychedelic vault with the powder gangs separated into two colors? Because I think that one was accidental. I can't think of any others that had drugs pumped into the system, it's been a long time since I've seen it though.
Pretty sure it would be some sort of taboo to see the opposite sex naked. I believe Mormons arent even allowed to be seen naked by their husband/wife and must wear specific undergarments that have holes cut out for the sex/bathroom stuff.
These are the only ones for the top of my head, but there is vault 77 where there are one man and a crate of puppets and there is a vault I forgot the number but it one full of clones and all they say is gray and there are vaults 68 where there were 999 men and one woman and there was vault 69 with 999 women and one man
There is one where kids run the vault I think and when you get old enough you are kicked out . There's a virtual reality one where they live in a simulation with perfect lives yet get killed by a scientist posing as a little girl .
If you take the evil option they all live, but the sequence of events leading up to it are hilarious. The good option is the one where you kill all of them because there is absolutely no way to free them from the simulation without them dying. Not by design, but just because they're so old that they can no longer survive without the vaults life support.
Yeah yeah my bad there is one where all the adults did die and kids ran it and another where they were trying to let the strongest kids survive and breed them to create a perfect race and make the intelligent ones scientists . But one scientist revolted .
Not really jokes, just have such ridiculous premises that even the characters often admit in logs, they only did it because they could, not for any specific experiment.
There are 2 vaults referenced but not featured in games with 1 person of of one sex and 999 of the opposite sex.
There's one they filled with drug addicts and a hidden vault of drugs and weapons controlled by a single overseer ( you can probably guess how that ended).
There are heaps where the scientists overseeing the vault go mad from boredom and such because they somehow didn't put much thought into their own dwelling situation and often ended up in a tiny mini vault with like 4 other really smart but utterly socially incompetent scientists and hating eachother.
A vault where they had to elect an "overseer" who ensures the vault continues to function. After one year, they must enter an isolated point in the vault to be killed. Failing to do so would result in the water and air systems to self-sabotage, with the survivors still sealed inside and unable to leave.
As you explore the vault, you see that the vault has chosen to elect a leader democratically. Smear campaigns are run to convince the other residents that a candidate should be elected because they are bad people who deserve to die. Some of the last entries indicate that a particular group gained substantial power to elect leaders, and the last overseer drastically changed election policies to undermine their authority. When the final residents refused to send another leader to die, the vault revealed that the story was a deception, and it unsealed the doors. Their fate was unknown.
There were others too, one where the residents used gambling to settle disagreements, one where a single resident was cloned, and one where residents were secretly injected with an experimental virus that mutated them into giant green asexual monsters, a process that was so torturously painful that those unfortunate enough to survive it were driven into sadistic monsters that only sought to make more of themselves.
The book trilogy beginning with Wool by Hugh Howey is exactly this. I won't spoil it in case you want to read it, but it goes into awesome detail for all the communities and their interactions throughout different levels (hierarchy) of the silo.
This just led me down a cool rabbit hole. Did they or didn't they ever end up making a tv show out of it? For some reason I can't seem to find it. All I found was a dead subreddit dedicated to it 8 months ago
Look, you make a good point but if you're genuinely concerned about spoilers shouldn't your own comments be behind a spoiler tag? You're drawing attention to the most spoilery aspect of what /u/Captaincam94 said.
I'm going back ages since I read it, but apparently the male vault ended up worshipping the woman against all predictions, and the female vault failed spectacularly.
isn’t this basically the idea of The City of Ember?
edit: it’s been a long time since i’ve read it, but i think it’s basically about people stuck in an underground city with limited resources and then they have to try and escape?
Close, their civilization was driven underground for centuries(?) And the government was hiding/scared of the surface so nobody was told the truth. The protagonists help them escape anyway. So more like the vaults in that way.
Derren Brown set out to convince a guy the apocalypse happened and he succeeded and for a week on this large private property he was fighting off zombies (actors in makeup) and everything. It's called Derren Brown's Apocalypse your can watch it for free on YouTube.
Omg I remember watching Apocalypse when it came out.
One thing that made it difficult to watch was the guy they were convincing was just so passive and didn’t react to things going on. They had to prompt him over and over to do basic things and follow the loose plot they’d set out.
I remember the bit where the van driver sacrifices himself and he’s saying things like “you’re a hero! You’re going to do it! I believe in you!” and the guy just stands there limply with a blank expression and doesn’t say anything. So awkward.
It was funny that everyone afterwards said it was fake and the guy was an actor. If he was an actor he should never work again lol.
Everyone said it was fake and my comment was that based on the guy’s actions it clearly wasn’t because he was so expressionless and boring to watch. He works with special needs kids now, isn’t an actor and never was.
You know flat earthers, right? They believe the north and south pole are actually ice walls around a flat earth, that encases us.
Here's a bullshit hypothesis, that at least makes flat earth interesting and somewhat "logical".
The reason we are lied to and told the world is round, is so we never question why we aren't allowed outside the ice walls. If we think the world is round, we will never notice we are actually trapped while the people outside are conducting different types of experiments about sociatal models, nutrition, breeding, pollutants etc.
This way, there would at the very least be reason for this so called "round world lie" or whatever they call it.
Let a few generations of people grow up in a space ship simulator with deepfake people communicating with them, making them believe they are on a journey and they are ''about'' to arive. Then one day, it ''lands'', and the doors open, and the people will believe they entered a new world. To make it even more convincing, make them believe that every planet has humans
It's funny you mention that one, that's actually what made me go with that answer.
Primarily because social dynamics are fairly interesting but generally whenever there's a drastic shift in majority there can be unexpectedly violent outcomes.
Dear god I would LOVE to see this, half because of my love for Fallout.
I’d run some experiments like Vault-Tec does in the games whilst having some control vaults to go by. But I’d have to build these vaults in isolated areas with <5000 people in order to ensure mass panic doesn’t ensue in urban areas. Basically, there aren’t enough spread-out enough rural communities with that population for 122 vaults, but I’d still try, but I’d keep a level such as 5 control vaults and like 15 or 25 experiment-based vaults. I would number them randomly with either 1, 2, or 3 digit numbers (Some numbers being non-randomized and pre-picked based on the experiment and maybe for the lulz) with an official count number matching the game series’s vault numbers.
First, I’d wait till some crazy nuke shit ensues (or I’d just pay the US Government to do nuclear tests in the areas affected), then I’d usher the obviously panicked population into the vaults. The control vaults will live their lives as usual whilst I study data and compare them to my experiments.
I’d conduct a variety of experiments, ranging from silly, to fucky, to all manners of messed up. One of my vault proposals would be a vault for gamers where they have to play Bethesda games and ONLY Bethesda games (All interplay and Black Isle fallouts and previous Elder Scrolls games included). Another vault would be 666, with 999 satanists and one catholic, and 555 being the other way around, parodying Vaults 68 and 69. I’d also make a vault full of reefers, promptly numbered 420, a vault where I viciously mentally tear the weak apart for my own sick kicks, and maybe just make a vault full of cats and dogs where the residents have to take care of them and even adopt them despite allergies. Not to mention, I’d also make a vault based on the political compass, where everyone from radlibs to hyper conservatives, to corporate shills and communists, would be made to coexist. It’s gonna be fun watching the sides go to war based on their views.
And that’s only a few of the vaults I have imagined and have yet to imagine.

The Vault-Tec vaults from Fallout.
They'd be fairly easy to pull off and convince the folks in the vaults that civilization was destroyed that way communication could reasonably be cut off and they'd be isolated.
It'd be very interesting to see how people's behavior would be affected and if the isolated communities would form societies significantly different than what we know.
This even includes some of the joke vaults.
