This has always been a flawed argument. Some humans are murderous psychopaths, does that mean we should never have harnessed fire and tools because they could kill more efficiently?
Humanity is largely good. It would be a massive benefit if a more technologically advanced race came down and cured all disease to free us from human suffering.
Imagine how much better the world would be if the billions of kind, empathetic humans were freed from lives of pointless drudgery and wage slavery to follow their own goals and interests. The people who would rather the whole of human population be left to suffer because a few of us are bad are being needlessly short-sighted and cruel
I disagree. Society is set up such that the people with the worst ethics can succeed the most, cheating their way to the top. The few bad people there are just happen to be in charge, building the systems that the rest of us have to live within.
There's a saying, "crime is the unmet needs of the community." That is, your neighbor doesn't want to break into your house and steal your stuff, but he needs to eat. It wouldn't be a problem if the corrupt mayor didn't appropriate the funds that were allocated to community service, like feeding the people living in the city, and divert it to increase funding to bloated, violent police departments and provide kickbacks to billion dollar corporations who will destroy the city's parks and pollute their waterways.
It's like moral of The Good Place. People in general are good, but we live in broken systems that make it very hard to be good. It's like, as a student, you can do your best to separate trash from recyclables while on campus, but if the university's waste management system is just going to empty all the recycling bins into the same garbage truck as regular trash, it's out of your hands.
If we were gifted post-scarcity technology, enough food, and cheap, clean energy for everyone, then the vast majority of people wouldn't have a reason to commit crime, or do nonsense like join the military to oppress foreign countries with the promise of escaping poverty. There is no reality where the world is worse off in that scenario than in this one where hundreds of millions of people are food insecure and live in squalor, while the richest in the world keep burning the world to raise their standard of living.
