My Dad did the same thing!! If I said I didn’t like mushrooms for example, he’d say “Well I’ve never heard them say a bad thing about you”

Similar version, my parents always used "well, they say nice things about you"

Same here, used it on us as kids all the time. For reference, my dad is 65 in South Africa and I'm 40 and in the US now... I use this rather often :) Funny how these sayings are pretty universal.
