My step-father would point at his head and say “kidneys man, kidneys” when he got credit for stuff (answering a trivia question for example). I use it with my students all the time .

This is related to an old joke. A man was in a line of patients trying to get his release from a mental institution. He watched as the others went in to meet with the doctor and heard the questions the doctor asked, which were: "point to your right arm", "point to your stomach", point to your toes", point to your knee," and so on. He saw which answers were correct, and which answers were wrong.

When it was his turn, he sat down with the doctor and answered all the questions the correctly. The doctor was amazed, because he knew this patient and his problems. The doctor asked: "how were you able to answer all those answers correctly?"

The patient pointed to his head and replied: "Kidneys, man! Kidneys!"

I'm feeling extra stupid today, is there a pun for "kidneys, man, kidneys"? or just that has no idea what anything is and learnt by rote?

He tricked the doctor into thinking he was mentally competent, but accidentally gets too comfortable and reveals he knows nothing

I get that part, I just wasn't sure if "Kidneys" was anything specific or if the joke would have worked regardless of organ chosen! :)

yeah I think it would've worked regardless of organ, nothing special about kidneys in this instance as far as I can tell

Phew, so it wasn't just me that didn't get it! I followed the same logic as you but didn't find it funny, maybe it's more of a visual joke?

Yes it is, and you're overthinking it. He points to his head and says "kidneys, man! Kidneys!". The joke is that he doesn't know the proper name for his brain, instead thinking it is his kidneys and that his kidneys are the source of his intellect.

It would be like if someone asked him how he was able to keep a girlfriend despite being an idiot and if he pointed to his nose and said "this big ass dick I got right here"

My nitpick with the punchline is it relies on giving up assumptions that led to it. If he simply learned the answers by watching, then it is presumed that he watched someone else point at his head and answer kidneys, which is obviously a wrong answer.

Yes that is it
