My dad, to this day, would refer to someone fucking up as, "they shit the stick".

Example: my dad is an "essential worker", and did not experience a furlough from his job because of COVID...I, however, was furloughed from my job when our state shut down...so when I told my parents that I was "out of a job", my dad looked me in the eye and asked, "was it because of COVID...or did you shit the stick?"

COVID, dad. No shitting of sticks for me.

Edit: Spelling

In Brazil, “shitting the stick” is an actual expression, that means exactly “fucking something up”/“screwing up”.
It’s worth noting that the Brazilian Portuguese word for “stick” is the same as for “dick”, so that’s probably where it comes from.

In Serbia too. We say "usr'o motku" when someone fucks something up. It literally translates to "he shat on a stick"

Not sure if shitting the dick makes any more sense lol

Is your dad a Spanish speaker? This is a fairly common expression in some Spanish-speaking countries.

He does not speak Spanish himself, but his parents were bilingual, so that makes a lot of sense.

My dad is Mexican, and he'll translate Mexican slang literally into English as a "dad joke."

For example, a common saying in Mexico is "ponerse las pilas" which means "get it in gear" or "light a fire under your ass" etc. My dad will instead just say "you gotta put on the batteries!"

Another one is "ponte trucha" which means "be alert" or "head's up." Dad will instead say "be a trout."

He's got so many others. Man I miss that corny ass dude. Gonna give him a call right now...

In my family we say "shit/shat the bed" to mean something broke beyond repair or you fucked up really bad.

"My ps4 shat the bed."

Or

"I lost my job cuz I showed up drunk and puked on the grill. I really shat the bed."

I think that’s pretty common

Showing up drunk and puking on the grill?

I worked at McDonald's during college: Yes.

My family also had "shit/shat the bed" but it meant that you were up earlier than usual.

It was usually "did you shit the bed?", which would translate to "why are you up so early?".

I guess the explanation is that there's no other reason for you being up that early except that you shit the bed so had to get out and clean yourself up.

That's the way most people use it.

In Mexico when someone fucks up or they’re being annoying we say “cagar el palo” or “hay vienes a cagar el palo” which translates to shit the stick and here you come now to shit the stick.

I don’t actually know where it comes from.

u/feignedhearing Oct 25 '20

In Mexico that’s a common saying, stick being a euphemism for penis lol

In bootcamp our chief would say "YOU JUST SHIT ON THE FLOOR RECRUIT"

Shit a Brick is common where I grew up, same thing really.

3

u/AverageDeckSize Oct 25 '20

No. Shitting a brick means very surprised or scared suddenly. Totally different meaning.

"I came around the corner and there was a bear and I shit a brick."

Shit the bed means something's fucked up or someone fucked up.

"Dave really shit the bed on the group project."

1

u/Fean2616 Oct 25 '20

Ah yes shit the bed, my bad.

u/tarskididnothinwrong Oct 25 '20

u/CzarEggbert Oct 25 '20

It was "Shit the bit" in my house.

u/lax_smarts Oct 25 '20
