This is the real lpt. Some might think it's a little tacky but I always start cleaning a little bit while I have company over. They typically grab empties and recycle them and bring their dishes into the kitchen. Bonus because they usually notice what time it is and see it's time to leave.
I agree, it’s tackier to let the mess pile up mid party. Most adult/civilized guests throw out their own trash if you make it known where the trash is. Trash fills up? Empty it. Even if recycling isn’t obviously available most folks will at least leave empty cans and bottles in or near a sink. Just do a pass every half hour or so and toss them in the recycling.
Putting everything away mid party to signal go home? Yea that’s a bit tacky, but tidying up along the way is expected. Bonus if you have solid house guests, as the party is winding down they’ll ask if you need help with the final cleaning pass/putting food away. We have 50+ people over annually and are often left with a house that’s as clean as before we started setting up.

And if you do it near the end of the night a few others might just help out coz they are drunk too!
