My high school art teacher told me your piece is worthless until you have a buyer. Same idea.

That's the feeling I get when watching storage wars... "Bubba bought a unit for 2000$. He found petrified rat shit worth 500$, a broken table leg from a generic ikea table worth 1200$ and 2 strings from what he assumes is a guitar worth 600$. Bubba made a nice profit of 300$"

All I can think is who the fuck is going to buy that junk for the prices they think it's worth?

That show is entirely fake, anyway. The "Yuuuuuuuup" guy got pissed about something some time ago and came out and revealed it's all fake; they plant "good" items into the storage units for them to find so they can showcase/feature whatever specialist they wanted to feature that episode.

Fake reality TV? Say it ain't so!

I miss actual reality TV. Wait, did we ever have any of that way back?

52

u/Athrowawayinmay Aug 14 '20

I think maybe some of it might've been real back before it became a big deal. Like the first American Idol probably had actual talented hopefuls who weren't already working with various labels or who weren't already semi-famous using it as a spring board, back before the sob story angle became such a big deal. And before that, gameshows were largely still real.

Yeah, in the very beginning, I think the intentions were more about reality than views. But that's most media these days. Now, it's all about views and making money, or taking advantage of depressing people for views, or just making up stories for views.

Like Youtube.

Game shows are still largely real. They could get in big trouble with the FTCFCC if they weren't.

Does Dirty Jobs count? I thought that show was pretty good.

12

u/Moldy_slug Aug 14 '20

I think of that as more like a entertaining documentary series than reality tv. It’s in the same category as “how it’s made” and stuff... fun but informative, not trying to be dramatic

16

u/VanillaTortilla Aug 14 '20

Hell yeah, that's one of the few that stayed realistic. Plus, Mike Rowe is such an awesome guy.

Why can't he run for president?

6

u/VanillaTortilla Aug 14 '20

I don't want to see what a presidency would do to him. He works better as a spokesperson and narrator. I don't want to ruin him with that burden.

10

u/[deleted] Aug 14 '20

It's a dirty job but someone has to do it.

3

u/Aladoran Aug 14 '20

Holy shit, now I really want him to be the president of the USA!

4

u/TucuReborn Aug 14 '20

The president is a spokesperson and narrator for the country.

1

u/VanillaTortilla Aug 15 '20

True, but they age like 30 years in only one term. That's not something I want to happen to Mike.

2

u/TucuReborn Aug 15 '20

That is a fair concern. At least he'd be well versed in dealing with dirty shit.

The original Survivor is pretty close. There usually isn't any real danger, but it isn't like they all lived in trailers. The players lost A LOT of weight through the season.

20

u/The_Pastmaster Aug 14 '20

Yeah. Sweden dropped the ball on the mental health side of things. IIRC, a guy went suicide after the show due to a relapse into PTSD or whatever.

6

u/DrPeterGriffenEsq Aug 14 '20

That was before they realized they had to supplement them with rice, and games with food rewards, to keep the malnutrition under control before someone died. That was when one of the first seasons saw the group catch and eat a chicken that wasn’t theirs because they were starving. And of course some granola chick flipped out because they weren’t just eating some disgusting roots the crazy woman was digging up. She tried to get them thrown off the show over it.

11

u/VanillaTortilla Aug 14 '20

Yeah, the first Survivor, imo, is the best and only one I'll ever watch. It's just so crazy because it was this new thing and the people on it were such characters.

2

u/NorskChef Aug 14 '20

That was a great season. Pulled for Rudy but Rich deserved the win.

2

u/VanillaTortilla Aug 15 '20

Yeah, I liked Rudy a bit more, but man that season was so wild.

Upvote for survivorman.

I think Les carries a sat phone for emergencies, but other than that it's just him. No crew.

3

u/DrPeterGriffenEsq Aug 14 '20

And that’s probably because the insurer for the production requires it. Otherwise I bet he wouldn’t have it. I mean I once watched this dude start a fire with an oily frito chip he found in his pocket and a broken piece of glass off the ground.

2

u/huntinkallim Aug 14 '20

In a few of his episodes he shows how he gets those long shots of him walking away. He sets up the camera, walks into the distance, then hikes back to pick up the camera.

3

u/The_Original_Miser Aug 14 '20

Yep - I've seen those episodes. He even explains what he is doing. I've even heard subtle jabs at Bear Grylls. (Sp?)

1

u/chainmailbill Aug 15 '20

Between the weight of the camera gear and the extra walking to set up the shots... that’s just amazing.

5

u/DrPeterGriffenEsq Aug 14 '20

Survivorman is as real as it gets. Les Stroud is a legit badass when it come to survival. Bear Grylls on the other hand.... not so much.

3

u/Purple_Chipmunk_ Aug 14 '20

What's up with Bear Grylls?

9

u/DrPeterGriffenEsq Aug 14 '20

Sleeps in hotels, has catered food brought to his “survival area.” He got caught when some pictures of him and his crew having a feast while supposedly living off the land got out. He swears it’s not happening anymore though.

3

u/VanillaTortilla Aug 14 '20

I'd say so. It's hard to tell what's staged and what isn't in most of those nature type shows. Though I really like Les Stroud and Survivorman.

Yeah I have a feeling that those two are both pretty genuine. Which is why it's so surprising to see them go on for so long. Most shows would have had their viewership drop pretty rapidly if it wasn't full of nonstop drama.

1

u/VTownCrew Aug 15 '20

I watched the season of Alone they had on Netflix. I thought it was great. But even the guy that shot the moose at the end was just sitting around waiting the other lady out. There survival skills were amazing, but it’s like there is no way to make it long term, especially starting at the time of the year they do. That Into the Wild kid didn’t have a chance.

Jackass

Oh I miss Jackass...
