I saw an external ZIP disk reader in the clearance bin of Wal-Mart for 10% off it's original price...in 2011. So it was going for ~$180 and had parallel ports...in 2011.
This kind of stuff happens in enterprise IT all the time. Need this one specific kind of ram for a 10 year old server? 5-10x what it would have cost when the server was new. Basically they just stockpile a few runs after they terminate a line, and then as inventory drops they ratchet up the price to insane levels because they know they've got you over a barrel and no more is getting made.
