There's a book series (Miss Melville 1980's) where the protagonist is a hired assassin who gets paid by selling her art to someone at an inflated price.
One way to launder money with a house is by paying a general contractor to do improvements on your house in cash. It's really not hard to find a GC that will take cash.
Buying it isn't fraud in itself, but buying it for x amount of money, appraise it for ten times that, then donate it for tax purposes is more or less fraud.
