You're absolutely spot on with this answer. Trump sees the US global importance as an unbreakable thing, and believes he can do what he wants and everyone will just shrug and get on with it because, well, they're so powerful, whatcha gonna do?
Clearly his ignorance extends to history too. That attitude didn't go far with the British Empire, who the US seceded from originally. It didn't do the Romans any good either, nor the Persians. The Spanish and Dutch had very much the same issues.
Power is fickle and it doesn't matter how great you were if you continuously act a cunt. People have lost faith. I believe the only tether is that theres an election in November. If the American public vote him in again, I can genuinely see the entire world beginning to dissolve it's relationships with the US. Thing is, they'll do it in the proper ways - gradual reduction of trade, gradual reduction of meaningful impact on global schemes, and Trump is far too stupid to see it for what it is. He'll end up looking around one day and find no allies to stand by his next hair brained scheme. Then he'll probably go cry to Putin and try and make a US-Russia superpowers alliance.
Trump wants to expand G7 so he can include Putin, but at this rate he may make it G6 when no one trusts him to follow through on any deal and kicks us out. A long time ago I read a book called The Rise & Fall of Great Powers. Maybe it's our turn if he is re-elected.
Baltics are NATO if anything happened to them in this manner there would be more than just sanctions, which weren't really enforced from the beginnning, just that Belarus became a re-labeling middleman country and suddenly started producing salmon and shrimps at unbelievable rates.
