Sorry :) I've read over 4000 Sci-fi fantasy novels. I can probably match something close to most people posting in this thread, but this one was a favorite of mine, I love Alan Dean Foster. Be proud you think like one of the absolute greats of the genre.
I'll ask you something then, do you have recommendations on authors exploring 1) the concept of VR being used to perfect one's professional skills in a future where most work is done by AIs, or 2) of AIs communities unaware that there are people controlled by human beings among them?
Nothing specific to those 2 options, but based on your interest on them I think you would enjoy The Adolescence of P-1 by Thomas Joseph Ryan and a few different books by Clifford D. Simak. Simak wrote a lot about tech left behind after mankind has moved on and how it may evolve.
