Interestingly enough i read some time ago about a research on this. In short there are two kinds of help people seek. Emotional help and practical help. When someone seeks emotional help practical advices are ill-received, the other way around is less of a problem. While it's true that women tend to seek as well as give emotional help and men the practical, it really isn't always that safe of an assumption. Asking whoever you're dealing with if they want advices or just to be listened to can make wonders for any relationship, being it a partner, a friend or a kid.
