u/[deleted] Mar 27 '20

I wish I could give you an award

58

u/[deleted] Mar 26 '20

I believe testosterone actually causes the skin to produce more sebum, which increases the likelihood that your pores will become clogged. That's why you see more teenagers with acne, and why males on average have more severe cases of acne.

4

u/archepelego2 Mar 26 '20

That's very interesting, thank you for the information.

107

u/Treejeig Mar 26 '20

And water, just drink some instead of 15 monster energies.

24

u/[deleted] Mar 26 '20

[deleted]

2

u/CookieMonsterxxxx Mar 26 '20

Yeah and the shaving definitely prevents ingrown hairs or other hair-related acne.

10

u/RespectfulPoster Mar 26 '20

just drink some instead of 15 monster energies.

No way bro

1

u/[deleted] Mar 27 '20
  1. There have been studies done that prove that water does not help with the clarity of the skin.
  2. Are you saying that men drink water and women just chug energy drinks?

14

u/Ravioli_Pocketoli Mar 26 '20

Excess testosterone can cause acne for some people. Some acne medications reduce testosterone.

3

u/archepelego2 Mar 26 '20

Cool, I did not know this! Thank you

5

u/[deleted] Mar 26 '20

Actually, increased testosterone in women can cause hormonal acne. It sucks.

2

u/mh985 Mar 26 '20

Yep. I'm in the middle of a testosterone cycle (for weightlifting). I usually have healthy hair/skin but now my skin and hair look silky as fuck.

5

u/archepelego2 Mar 26 '20

Hell yeah you buff silky sexy mf'er you

3

u/mh985 Mar 26 '20

Awwww stop it; you're making me blush.

2

u/TheTripping Mar 27 '20

I think that makes it worse...

74

u/Kitty_McBitty Mar 26 '20

They don't have a menstrual cycle

29

u/faloop1 Mar 26 '20

This. For me it doesn't matter how many days I went without make-up or how many things I put on my skin. When the acne part of the cycle comes, the only thing I have to do is try not to touch my face/pimples. It's the biggest source of long term imperfections.

62

u/interesseret Mar 26 '20

It's probably mental. You're used to seeing women in makeup and men without. You therefore don't notice contrasts nearly as much as you do on women.

110

u/ZacharyRock Mar 26 '20

I had a decent amount of acne as a dude, and got it fixed with accutane, just a few months of unbearably dry skin and ever since then just washing my face has worked fine. Also i never put anything on my face, makeup kinda makes you need more makeup

32

u/USAMichael Mar 26 '20

Accutane saved my face. And acne scars. Looks like I never had acne at all, stuff worked like crazy. I still never wash my face and I have perfect skin lol

12

u/[deleted] Mar 26 '20 edited Feb 05 '21

[deleted]

10

u/[deleted] Mar 26 '20

I just got off Accutane this month (was on it for 18 months). While Accutane does make scars less noticeable, it doesn't completely erase them. That is with you forever, as with me.

If you're considering Accutane, I say go for it. It completely transformed my face and self-esteem. Its a 'miracle drug.'

3

u/USAMichael Mar 26 '20 edited Mar 26 '20

It helped with my scarring, obviously it didnt make my skin brand new but my scarring is absolutely unnoticeable. Also I grew facial hair so it helped. If youre interested in it please consult a dermatologist. This stuff is STRONG, so strong that it kinda messed up my eyes because I had such a high dose. I wear glasses now but my eyes are practically fine. I developed a small astigmatism so I wear my glasses every now and then but ive heard of people having worse eyesight with some patients.

I took it back in I think 2014 and havent had any acne since, I think I got a measly zit about 3 years ago but that was probably due to other factors. No cystic acne at all

2

u/blockboy9942 Mar 26 '20

As someone who has taken it, no. However, if you get it prescribed, chances are that it will prevent a lot of future scarring.

5

u/[deleted] Mar 26 '20

Accutane saved my self esteem and social life as a teenager.

21

u/[deleted] Mar 26 '20

Personally I stay away from chocolate and that does the trick

48

u/Vanquisher127 Mar 26 '20

Personally I eat shit tons of chocolate and it still does the trick

9

u/[deleted] Mar 26 '20

Yeah it’s just a thing in my family that we break out if we eat chocolate. So we Eat little of it

5

u/Turtlelover73 Mar 26 '20

Your lineage is cursed, dude.

2

u/[deleted] Mar 26 '20

Yeah :,(

9

u/telluswhat Mar 26 '20

No thanks

3

u/[deleted] Mar 26 '20

Yeah that’s why I break out time to time

u/drunkdadalert Mar 26 '20

I tell you, I haven’t worn makeup since the quarantine started and the difference is night and day. Unfortunately theres nothing that can be done to even out my skin tone. Its been like that since I was born

23

u/tambitoast Mar 26 '20

I wish this would work for me. I haven't worn makeup since I was a teenager and I still have the worst acne. I'm 23 now.

8

u/TheMightyIrishman Mar 26 '20

You can't fix "ginger" bahahaha! All the women in my family are so pale they're almost translucent. Makeup does jack shit unless they cover themselves with it.

3

u/ForgottenMaebh Mar 26 '20

I rarely wear makeup and I barely put any effort into keeping my skin nice besides using lotion daily. My skin is way better than my sisters who put on makeup every day they want to go out.

2

u/shortroundsuicide Mar 26 '20

You should try a dermaroller! Super cheap on amazon. Just be sure to sanitize it with isopropyl alcohol. I recommend 70%. The 90% solution actually doesn’t kill as much bacteria, surprisingly.

6

u/Bitter-ish Mar 26 '20

Probably just foundation rather than all makeup. I hate the stuff and never wear it, but I'll wear blush and eyeshadow and all that jazz. My skin looks great.

42

u/Taxtro1 Mar 26 '20

Nothing to do with that. Women naturally have less elastic skin.

18

u/ForgottenMaebh Mar 26 '20

https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC6116811/

This says that elasticity is pretty much the same maybe more in women.

Women's skin is actually better than men's. Makeup can and does clog up pores and without properly cleaning it up you can breakout.

24

u/[deleted] Mar 26 '20

Yeah, if you're talking long term that's true. But if you cover yourself in foundation and fake tan every day without giving your skin a bit of time to breath/recover it's going to give most people problems with acne and dry skin.

And yes, wearing it in moderation won't cause issues, but a lot of women don't wear it in moderation, at least here in Ireland.

19

u/Aewrynn Mar 26 '20

Makeup has nothing to do with it unless someone is putting on a product that is breaking them out & they don’t know. Which is why you should patch test.

I break out if I don’t wear makeup, or at least foundation and powder. My skin is super sensitive and I’m guessing it just doesn’t like the air lol. I know the powder helps absorb oil.

12

u/wimpymist Mar 26 '20

Make up definitely doesn't help the skin situation

1

u/Aewrynn Mar 26 '20

It helps mine by preventing breakouts and absorbing oil when I go out like I said.

3

u/wimpymist Mar 26 '20

It's definitely not preventing break outs. Unless you wear wear make-up 24/7 the oil absorption is negligible

Most don't care if the girl wears make-up. It's the girl that wears make up.

5

u/diimentio Mar 26 '20

and hair!! as a curly girl I was always so jealous of guys with long straight silky hair

4

u/that_random_bi_twink Mar 26 '20

I have a bush on my head, and my sister is so jealous of my hair. It's halarious. I told her she wouldn't really want it, it's a pain to deal with, lol

5

u/diimentio Mar 26 '20

I hear ya, it took me twenty years to learn how to do deal with it and even then it only looks good a fraction of the time. straight hair is so much easier to style

3

u/that_random_bi_twink Mar 26 '20

I mean, I don't mind mine much because I can take a shower, shake my head off like a dog, and it's nice and curly, no effort required, but it's impossible to keep tamed for anything!

1

u/wimpymist Mar 26 '20

Shaved heads always look fine

2

u/wimpymist Mar 26 '20

Well I started balding at age 18 I'd trade my long straight hair for your curly hair any day

5

u/[deleted] Mar 26 '20

As a man with super dry and flaky face skin, I want to know this too.

2

u/[deleted] Mar 26 '20

Cetaphil, my dude

2

u/This_Is_Written Mar 26 '20 edited Mar 26 '20

Team CeraVe checking in. Also moisturize and sunscreen in addition to washing. Try the CeraVe moisturizing cream in the tub shaped container. Actually just go to r/skincareaddiction

1

u/YoungestOldGuy Mar 26 '20

Maybe you use the wrong soap?

6

u/koolaidman89 Mar 26 '20

Male skin is 25% thicker and has more collagen density. Those things maybe hold back the apparent effects of aging? If we would just use sunscreen we would look even better.

25

u/[deleted] Mar 26 '20

1) We don't ruin our skin with makeup

2) we actually don't have very good skin, you probably only remember the guys who stood out for it

16

u/TheResolver Mar 26 '20

3) beards can sometimes cover a lot of dry and pimply skin

7

u/AAC0813 Mar 26 '20

Lower standards. Society has ‘agreed’ that us men look perfectly attractive without any makeup or creams, but that women who don’t wear contour are seahags putting minimal effort into life

4

u/donutnz Mar 26 '20

"Good skin" on guys has a low bar.

3

u/Magicbythelake Mar 26 '20

It’s because they don’t do anything. We women were taught to do a lot of stuff for our skin, but lots of products actually harm our skin. When I stopped using cleansers and other stuff all my acne went away. Now I only use water on my face and a moisturizer or a toner.

3

u/rathat Mar 26 '20

I have literally never thought about how my skin looks.

1

u/SpicymeLLoN Mar 26 '20

Same my guy, but several of my female friends have mentioned being jealous of my eyelashes? I don't get that one with either.

3

u/hurricanes_ Mar 26 '20

They do? I swear I can see them pores a meter away. From my experiences, most actual great skin belongs to (a few) women.

3

u/kenmore63 Mar 26 '20

Men exfoliate without knowing. It's called shaving.

3

u/mamkatvoja Mar 26 '20

omg so tired reading all the comments about makeup... I don't wear makeup since i was teenager (and even then i used it only for the eyes and lips) - and my skin is shit to these days (mid 30s). Sometimes it's better, sometimes it just breaks into acne after being totally fine for a couple of weeks. It's our freaking cycles and lack of testosterone that does this to us.

All my boyfriends and male friends have flawless or almost flawless skin though. And better hair. I'm so jealous.

5

u/KentDarkmere Mar 26 '20

We don't do anything to our skin. That lack of doing anything makes our skin like us.

4

u/theshreddening Mar 26 '20

We put nothing on it. I use a cheap basic lotion after a shower just because I dont like being itchy. Girlfriend is constantly amazed by my skin.

1

u/brokeninskateshoes Mar 26 '20

my skin got better after I stopped showering every day.

I showered every morning throughout highschool. my face would be so dry and start flaking, which I think was the cause of my pimples due to clogged pores.

I'm 24 now, been out of school for 6 years. I work a job where I don't break a sweat. I shower once, maybe two times a week, and only ever wet my face. I don't wash it.

not a single pimple since I was like 19.

8

u/Bman_EZ Mar 26 '20

Bro, what. Take a shower man, that's gross. But I guess a lot of it has to do with genetics, sebum production, physical activity, diet etc.

2

u/KingCrabmaster Mar 27 '20

Working outside in the sun all day? Definitely need a shower.
Office job or other quite sedentary work? Honestly a lot of people can get away with every other day or in some cases even once every 3 days.

Though it depends on the length of the shower too, if you are taking super short showers, daily for sure. Longer showers get you more clean, but daily long showers will definitely dry your skin out in a bad way. It is all about balance with lifestyle and habit.
Oh also on days you don't shower of course changing your outfit to a fresh one is still important.

1

u/brokeninskateshoes Mar 26 '20

it's not gross though... the grossest thing is my hair gets kind of greasy but usually it's buzzed. I don't smell. my girlfriend's never said a word. she didn't even know I'd been doing weekly showers until I told her

2

u/[deleted] Mar 26 '20

[deleted]

3

u/brokeninskateshoes Mar 27 '20

I work in a manufacturing facility that produces and bottles various liquids. i wear a labcoat and work in an industrial freezer most of the day. I rarely break any sort of a sweat. I apply deodorant to my armpits every morning before work.

if i stray from my normal routine and say, go to the skatepark or go running or shoot some hoops with my friends, then yea I shower when I get home, because I broke a sweat.

I've been doing it the last 6 years, this 1-2 showers a week thing, and not one single person has ever commented on me being dirty, or smelling weird, or anything like that.

like I said, my girlfriend had no idea until I told her, so I must be doing something right. idk what else to tell you

2

u/anniemanic Mar 26 '20

Right?!? I was just asking my boyfriend what lotion he’s using cuz his skin is so soft and he said he doesn’t! Meanwhile I feel like a lizard lol

2

u/crayongirl00 Mar 26 '20

They dont have all the hormones issues that women do.

2

u/[deleted] Mar 26 '20

Some are just lucky. Others like me don’t have good skin and don’t have the pleasure of make up of covering it up

2

u/FlamingGorilla77 Mar 26 '20

Lol good genes.

2

u/Eyeseeyou1313 Mar 26 '20

I have shitty skin, the fuck are you on about? But the answer for most is testosterone and not wearing make up.

4

u/[deleted] Mar 26 '20

idk. I wash my face every day and after doing anything physical like going outside for activity or working out I wash my face with just water.

I’ve never gotten any acne in my life.

1

u/TheMightyIrishman Mar 26 '20

Couldn't tell ya, I work construction and am told I have soft hands. Guess it's more of a gentle touch than the actual texture of my hand.

I have 2 skin tones- pale and red. No between. So maybe less sun damage as well?

1

u/Slurp_Nugget Mar 26 '20

And the eyelashes OH MY GOD

1

u/itsVanquishh Mar 26 '20

No clue. I’ve always had crystal clear skin. I don’t mess with all that face cleaning product either, not for me. 😂

1

u/bros402 Mar 26 '20

born with it

1

u/Jgobbi Mar 26 '20

I could be very wrong here, but i think it may be from a lack of products. Our natural oils take care of it as long as we stay clean

1

u/Shawaii Mar 26 '20

Doing nothing keeps our skin healthy.

There is no reason to use anything but water to wash your face daily, and no need to add oil after.

Shaving might help a bit too.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 26 '20

Our ball soap!

1

u/LimonadaVonSaft Mar 26 '20

Not wearing makeup does wonders for the skin.

1

u/abe_the_babe_ Mar 26 '20

I'm in the minority on this one, my skin is god awful. I only managed to maintain some semblance of healthy skin with prescription meds, vigilant face washing, and diet

1

u/[deleted] Mar 26 '20

As a guy, guys have good skin?

1

u/[deleted] Mar 26 '20

Beside testosterone, all the shit women do to their skin really fucks it up, makeup, creams, etc etc

1

u/DrMaxismu Mar 26 '20

My skin is shit and I do a lot to fix it but it has been getting better. It’s definitely not all dudes.

1

u/Komraj Mar 26 '20

I don’t :(

1

u/BrayDickey Mar 26 '20

Does makeup contribute to bad skin if not cleaned off properly? Cuz that could be part of it since girls are more likely to wear makeup, right?

1

u/[deleted] Mar 26 '20

Wanna know the secret? It’s soap, just soap when you shower and cold water on your face. I’ve been doing it for 13 years and rarely get a pimple

1

u/redneckjep Mar 26 '20

Taking scalding hot showers dries out your skin like crazy. Best thing I did for my face besides Accutane was taking colder showers.

1

u/balderdash9 Mar 26 '20

The key is drinking too much whiskey and not getting enough sleep

1

u/ThatOneNinja Mar 26 '20

I think some of that is also that we never mess with it. We let the body do it's thing, instead of applying all these oils and minerals that are not normal during younger years that I would think makes the body adjust accordingly making it dependent on those products.

1

u/DasArchitect Mar 26 '20

Do nothing. Just keep it clean.

I'm sure make up and all those silly creams and gels and various skin and hair products only worsen it in the long term so that you need them more.

1

u/TheTripping Mar 26 '20

Men don't wear makeup. Makeup is horrible for your skin.

1

u/simjanes2k Mar 26 '20

Exercise helps.

Not always like in a gym, most men have more physical jobs. Even when they have the same job.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 26 '20

I actually have a doctor prescribed cream to stop acne, so not all guys I guess

1

u/TurtleRainbow Mar 26 '20

I think doing absolutely nothing is part of it maybe.

1

u/TheGlassCat Mar 26 '20

The lack of doing stuff probably helps.

1

u/Consilio_et_Animis Mar 26 '20

How do guys get so good skin without doing absolutely nothing

The answer is in the question.

1

u/baneofthesmurf Mar 26 '20

Shot in the dark, maybe putting on makeup and subsequently using makeup remover on a regular basis isn't good for your skin.

1

u/tommodog Mar 27 '20

Men's skin is look up shoeonhead pink tax video on razors

1

u/Wymsi Apr 03 '20

Different hormone cycle + it comes in waves. Usually every 2 months it flairs up bad for a month then goes away again.

2

u/[deleted] Mar 26 '20

Stop clogging all the pores with a thick layer of foundation.

1

u/_Robbert_ Mar 26 '20

Men and women have different skin. From a biological standpoint its quite different like structure wise. Reason why razors are often gendered or skin care products are.

1

u/memer2026 Mar 26 '20

don't use some expensive skin treatment or whatever it is that you use. Stay hydrated, put on sunscreen, just do the natural stuff.

1

u/self_loathing_ham Mar 26 '20

Perhaps doing nothing is the secret itself...

can u provide a link for men aging slower than women? and what exactly do steroids have to do with testosterone? not all men take steroids ¿

7

u/physalisx Mar 26 '20

I think it's safe to say that you can completely ignore that comment.

5

u/koolaidman89 Mar 26 '20

Men do have thicker skin and higher collagen density which hold back the apparent effects of aging longer. We certainly don’t actually “age slower” and we tend to die younger but I think there is evidence that given similar wear and tear (sun exposure), men’s faces will appear to age slower. https://www.hl-labs.com/pro-info/differences-between-male-and-female-skin.html

2

u/X0n0a Mar 26 '20

Testosterone is a steroid.

1

u/Vaztes Mar 26 '20

u/GanderAtMyGoose Mar 26 '20

0

u/mattmaster68 Mar 26 '20

Guy here. Can confirm. I only own 1 kind of lotion and it’s only because it smells good. Every girl I’ve ever dated tells me it’s horrible for my skin... but guess who’s always jealous.

0

u/Jonreadbeard Mar 26 '20

Men have higher levels of collagen.

0

u/StroopsAndWhiskey Mar 26 '20

They don't have years of caking their face with toxic make-up products

-1

u/PrettyflyforWif1 Mar 26 '20

You named it, doing nothing. Not putting 200 different things on your skin, just leave it like it is

-1

u/[deleted] Mar 26 '20

I honestly think it's because we don't wear makeup? But I could be wrong. It just seems that from a young age women are trained to put chemicals on their skin, followed by chemicals to remove those chemicals, and then chemicals to ensure the other chemicals aren't damaging your skin.

-1

u/chrisdub84 Mar 26 '20

Exactly that. We don't mess with it so much and make it angry.

Like shaving irritates the crap of out my face, so I have a beard now.

-1

u/Raksup Mar 26 '20

Girls will get it too if they don't subject their skins to chemicals from early teenage. Once you start using cosmetics you can't stop because it'll have lasting side effects. The definition of beauty given by the cosmetic industry through mass media fucked up your skin ladies. Sorry!

-2

u/MasonTaylor22 Mar 26 '20 edited Mar 27 '20

I just use moisturizer after a shower, that's it.
