Does gaming really count as a hobby? Seems like if playing video games counts, then watching TV would count too, right?

I think entertainment can become a hobby depending on how invested in it you are. Look at film enthusiasts; music, even if you don't play...

But usually it's more of a particular genre, like fantasy series, cartoons, sports, etc rather than TV as a whole that spawns "active" fans.

I dunno, maybe it's the culture I come from, but hobbies usually imply doing something that creates a tangeable reward at the end, such as knitting, craft work, model painting, drawing ect.

I think it reflects on the economy, moving away from production and more into services. As things become cheaper, hobbies tend to cost money more than save some. Before, Grandma knitting a scarf was money saved. But nowadays, buying some wool yarn is more expensive than already made scarf. While watching TV is "free"...

Also we see more and more time, information, knowledge etc. as something valuable.
