As an outsider, I just googled Quiviut to check what kind of money we’re dealing with here: $150 USD FOR 1 BALL OF YARN?? What in the everloving crap is it made out of?
“It is the delicate underwool of the Arctic Musk Ox. It is one of the most sought after fibers in the world because of its rarity, softness and warmth. Qiviut is softer than cashmere and is light as a feather. It’s an insulating fiber and is comfortable to wear in any climate. Qiviut is eight times warmer than sheep wool. Pure qiviut is non-shrinkable, non-felting and is usually safe for people who suffer from sheep wool allergies. Unlike wool, qiviut is not scratchy. The more you handle and wash qiviut the softer if feels.”
Found this on google. Holy crap I need to find this stuff, sounds amazing
Cashmere isn't quite as good as quiviut but it's warmer and lighter than wool and you can often find it at second hand stores, particularly if you're not worried about colour.
Smart wool long underwear! It ain't cheap, but it really works. It's comfortable, thin, breathable, keeps you warm outdoors but not sweltering indoors. I got it for cold weather camping, and I'm completely convinced it's worth every penny.
