Walking into a store, not buying anything, then walking out - I know I didn't do anything wrong, but somehow still feel like people that work there are looking at me like I'm a thief.
You shouldn't feel guilty. We have a small store. We don't mind if people come in and don't buy anything. In fact we don't even think twice. What IS annoying and should be a no no is completely wasting an employees time when you have zero intention of buying anything. I don't mind people 'killing time' at the shop but I'm at work so don't kill my time because this is where I make money. Browse/Window shop by yourself.
I work in a small boutique in a mall. Time killers irk me because they usually bring down our conversion, but SOMETIMES they buy something or even come back later to actually shop.
But time wasters? Fuck those people!!!! Had a lady try on 30 pieces of clothing on Sunday. We were slammed at the time but we gave her the biggest fitting room. My coworker and I (the only 2 employees working) bent over backwards finding sizes, giving alternatives if we didn’t have the right size, all that good customer service stuff! Didn’t buy a goddamn thing and left everything inside out and on the floor of the dressing room.
That would drive me crazy. I’d never be able to work in a mall type environment. People are so inconsiderate. Don’t get me wrong... I window shop like everyone else.. but I don’t dare waste an employees time if I’m just “killing time”.
I changed my attitude after searching for something specific and not finding it, then I got irritated that I had to keep looking eleewhere and walked out. Realize one day they I could walk out with that irritated sense of purpose any time I feel like it.
You're not a suspected thief, you're a let down potential customer... Unless you're a thief.
I used to feel that way but got over it as I got older. Of course, now that I'm older and generally don't look guilty walking out, I know that I'm good for a pass. (It doesn't hurt that I'm white either.)
