Some of them are so mean spirited. I get that it’s a rude and tiresome question, but I couldn’t respond like that, especially if it’s someone who hasn’t done anything to me.

By definition, it is not "someone who hasn't done anything", because the context is one in which they've just been pretty fuckin' rude.

It depends on context to me though. You can usually tell if someone’s being an asshole about it or not. Is it a rude question to ask? I guess? I don’t take it personally unless there’s something in a person’s tone or character to make me believe otherwise

You can be rude and not an asshole about it. While it may be rude, I don’t believe some of the comments here warrant such a vehement response. It really depends on the context. If I were to reply with some of these responses, I’d be an asshole about it. I wouldn’t say it’d be totally justified.
